Understanding panic buying

I'm thinking that it's not sustainable. To be clear, I mean that shoppers can't keep doing it for any length of time. For example, all the panic buying demographic bought 10 times their usual toilet roll shop this week, but now won't be buying any for quite a while, because they've got no room and they're sick of the sight of it, and they feel they have plenty.

So, the best response to panic buying is to just wait a little bit until the shops get over the demand-spike, then carry on as normal?

Interested to hear what others think.

I think the news of over 70s possibly staying in for 4 months means their friends and family are panic buying for them now.

My morrisons delivery driver raised an eyebrow and queried whether I was "stocking up", nope, just the regular £240 weekly shop for a family of 9.....

It winds me up actually, because I cant actually buy enough of some of the routine stuff for our normal requirements, thankfully bog-roll was on offer last week so I bought two lots, but I can only order 2 bottles of shower gel - If you think generally we have to get through 50+ showers per week, it's not a lot to go around....

What happens when over 70s have to isolate, and you end up with 3 households to buy for but there are no online slots or food, no basics in store, or a limit on what you can buy?

Eventually people who are panic buying, unless they are very wealthy, will have to reign in their spending surely?

I’m on a budget I can’t afford to spend £100s more on shopping as there just isn’t the money to do so.

It will be interesting to see how we get on with only being allowed to buy limited amounts, whilst also having to shop double to cater for those on lockdown. We'll have to go to more than one shop, which is somewhat counterintuitive in the circumstances.
