...Boris Johnson and the Tories will get booted out in 5 years time.

No they won’t.

Alwaysreadyforbed · 14/03/2020 03:30

And people banging on about the last ten years of austerity...do you not think that that’s exactly what he’s been trying to avoid with his actions? All this talk about closing everything right now would be catastrophic for the economy but now that’s ok with you? Austerity is actually ok now?

Eireni · 14/03/2020 06:50

You know what I super hope we’ll be worrying about something else in 12 months time and the electorate will have forgotten about it by 2024. At the moment I think that’s unlikely, because we’re talking (possibly tens of) thousands of people dying from this - just in the UK - we are all going to be affected somehow, and it’s not a short blip, this is going to be a massive issue for the entire of this year & next winter at least, until a vaccine is released. Then then there’ll be a faff about getting the vaccine out to people.

I’m generally of the philosophy that if you expect the worst your either right or pleasantly surprised things weren’t as bad....I am fully expecting this to be mostly like the movie Contagion.

Eireni · 14/03/2020 06:50

Apart from I don’t want to see Gwyneth Paltrow’s skull cut open!

DoubleAction · 14/03/2020 07:00

I don't know, I think Boris could go down in history for being the one World leader who got this right and I've never said anything remotely like that about him before.

However, no one is political point scoring over this, the only thing I've heard Labour say is that the cross party working has been excellent. Maybe that's a "one good thing".

You can buy Corona beer very cheaply at the moment! Although I'm not sure what that says about the public's response to this can be called "a good thing".

AmelieTaylor · 14/03/2020 07:02

FMD I opened this as I thought a little light relief might be nice. I have family & friends that are going to die. My chances of making it through this aren’t fabulous.

But you want to turn it into political point scoring. FFS

I am not Bozo’s best friend (many people will lose loved ones before their time’ & I’m not sure austerity was the best way to handle the crash - but fucking hell, you’re deluded if you think 10 years of labour would have seen us in a better place right now.

As for Brexit & the wonderful EU. -have you seen where Italy is at right now?

Frankly, what happens at the elections in a few years time isn’t something I can raise a care about right now. I’ll just be thankful to be alive to vote.

Stop the ridiculous point scoring

There is NO ‘good side’ of Covid 19. Just a lot of death & suffering.

DoubleAction · 14/03/2020 07:03

FWIW other parties (except perhaps SNP) seem to be supporting his stance anyway.

slipperywhensparticus · 14/03/2020 07:07

One good thing? I've found out who my true friends and family are turns out as predicted I have none

Eireni · 14/03/2020 07:19

It’s not like Johnson is really making any actual decisions here anyway. He’s doing what Whitty & Vallance and Cummings tell him.

Blurpblorp · 14/03/2020 07:21

While I agree that this isn't the time for political point scoring... I do think in fact that the significant reduction in air travel and movement of people is an extremely good thing where climate change is concerns. Almost too much of a coincidence 🤔

BecauseReasons · 14/03/2020 09:06

Yes, I agree with this. It's probably the only thing that could have done it. That's the only good thing- if you remove yourself from the human race and look objectively from an environmental and planetary perspective, a drop in population for our greedy species is not only overdue but actually a positive thing, environmentally.

TheMemoryLingers · 14/03/2020 09:22

I'm hoping that, as a country, uniting against a common disaster will soften the edges of the Leave/Remain chasm that has grown and grown over the last five years.
