In 2018, there were 6,507 suicides registered in the UK,
Statistics on reported road casualties in Great Britain for the year ending June 2018 show there were 1,770 reported road deaths.
In the construction industry an average of 36 fatalities to workers and five to members of the public each year over the last five years;
That is an average of 542 suicides every month,147 deaths on the roads and three construction workers killed. Combined that is 693 deaths each month or about 23 deaths every day.
The 2019–20 coronavirus disease was confirmed to have spread to the United Kingdom on 31 January from China when the first two cases with the respiratory disease COVID-19, caused by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, were confirmed in Newcastle upon Tyne.
That is about 6 weeks so while ten people have died from coronavirus about 743 will have committed suicide and 202 will have been killed on UK roads.
Since coronavirus started there have been 10 deaths in the UK, less than half the number of deaths from suicide and RTA in a single day. It is approximately the same as the average number of construction workers killed in six weeks but that is never mentioned.
Why is all the reporting on every news channel about the one virus and not about the deaths from other causes?
I hate to quote him but Corporal Jones in Dad’s Army seems to have the right idea when he says “Don’t panic”.
Take sensible precautions, wash your hands. Pay attention and don’t use a handheld mobile when driving, if you feel stressed ask for help. Use safety gear when working at heights.
There is nothing new, you do not need 100 toilet rolls, you just need to take sensible precautions.

If you're not elderly or immunocompromised you're not considered at risk of death.

The age profile for morbidity and mortality is different to the normal seasonal flu virus - CV19 is impacting people who are nowhere near 'elderly'.

Anyway, stocking up enough to self isolate isn't all about ones own risk, is it - it's to avoid infecting other people who may be made very ill or die from it. People who use phrases like 'may sadly hasten the demise of the elderly and Co morbid' but who aren't taking this seriously obviously aren't actually very sad about those early deaths at all.Hmm

limpbizkit · 13/03/2020 22:51

@ErrolTheDragon what a sentimentalised emotive statement to make that I 'don't care' about the deaths from covid 19 just because I stated a fact on who is most at risk. Very manipulative of you

ErrolTheDragon · 13/03/2020 22:56

Nah, I'm a rational scientist who can spot glib and not entirely accurate statements.

limpbizkit · 13/03/2020 22:57

@ErrolTheDragon you make very emotive statements for one so scientific..

limpbizkit · 13/03/2020 22:59

OK well you go wrap yourself in your Cotton wool @ErrolTheDragon im sure your anxiety and hype will really help the coronavirus spread. I'm sure it'll help you and your family to become immune. Ta ra!

Buccanarab · 13/03/2020 23:01

We may be lucky and it might not spread as predicted but thats unlikely which means by the end of this the likelyhood is around 1% of our population could be dead and there won't have been enough hospital beds never mind staff to treat the sickest of us.

Is there any evidence that suggests it will spread as predicted? None of the countries where it's established have seen an 80% infection rate. China's currently at 0.006% for confirmed cases and seems to have mostly levelled out at around 80k. Italy is at 0.02%, Iran 0.014% and the UK 0.001%.
Even if the real number of infected is 10, 20, 100 times the confirmed cases we're still not even at 1%.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 23:02

Limpbiz I’ve had viral pneumonia. And have the fcked up body to prove it.

Quite possibly from a similar virus as was living on a farm.

I Feel somewhat qualified.

Trust me you don’t want it.

Chloemol · 13/03/2020 23:05

To me the issue is social media, full of people talking a load of tosh because someone somewhere said this might happen. We Have slightly more population than France, but under half of their cases, and they are a much larger country than us. Yet they are closing schools etc, why? It’s not going to stop the virus, actually I don’t think anything will.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 23:07

Ignorance is bliss they say.

lumpy76 · 13/03/2020 23:12

@limpbizkit they are also far less likely to catch one of them! This one they are highly likely to catch if they come into contact with it....which is likely!!

MusicToMyEars800 · 13/03/2020 23:16

I may be controversial.... but...... I am not worried in the slightest and think everyone is over reacting and being blind sheep bulk buying hair that isn’t needed!!!! They don’t do this when it’s the flu so what’s the urgency?!!! Yes I know peopeywill come at me with defence but all I can say is wake up and smell the fucking coffee people.... it’s not the end of the fucking world!!!!

LemonGingerCakes · 13/03/2020 23:16

FFS you're only at risk of dying from the virus if you're elderly or have Co morbidities.

Which applies to many people. Insensitive comment.

MusicToMyEars800 · 13/03/2020 23:16

Hair =shit

Gilead · 13/03/2020 23:22

Good for you not worrying about it, I guess WHO aren’t either. When was the last time universities closed? Businesses encouraged working from home? This is something to be concerned about.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/03/2020 23:22

They don’t do this when it’s the flu so what’s the urgency?!!!

People in risk groups get vaccinated, which gives fairly good levels of protection, and it doesn't spread as easily.

theflushedzebra · 13/03/2020 23:23

They don’t do this when it’s the flu so what’s the urgency?!!

The emergency is that is it not the flu. It's a global pandemic of a new virus that nobody has any immunity to, and is incredibly contagious. We don't know how it may mutate yet, There is no vaccine, no cure - just respirators, and experimental drugs. We don't really know even how many are infected, And it's killing people, health services are overwhelmed.

LemonGingerCakes · 13/03/2020 23:25

it may sadly hasten the demise of the elderly and Co morbid if caught

Well, that’s ok then Hmm

MusicToMyEars800 · 13/03/2020 23:25

I work in a private nursery and have a child who suffers with viral induced wheeze so I’m not oblivious. Of course i am concerned about my DD but I also can’t see why so many people are panic buying Hmm

Abracad · 13/03/2020 23:26

Excellent and useful post. Thanks. Mind if I share with my 89yo dad and sister-in-law with stage 4 cancer?

In other words:

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 23:28

It’s not the flu. Its SARS look it up and the data.

MusicToMyEars800 · 13/03/2020 23:28

I understand the concern but I do think there are quite a few people overreacting on the panic buying of loo roll... like loo roll with cure the virus... no we all just need to make sure we are being extra vigilant on hygiene whe it comes to washing hands etc

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 23:28

I give up I’m so sorry for the shock you will endure over the coming weeks.

middleager · 13/03/2020 23:31

Coconut Everybody should read your post.

Tonz · 14/03/2020 00:14

Do people seriously think this is like flu?
Countries are in total lock down., a decision that will damage their economy for a long time. Wouldn't happen if it were just hyped up flu.
Most of us probably won't feel too ill but loads of us will and too many will need hospital treatment at the same time and the NHS won't cope.
The fact that it's older people dying doesn't make it OK. Someone in their 60-70s could still have a good 20-30 years left

thenightsky · 14/03/2020 00:21

Yes, people really do think it's just flu. My friend has asthma and COPD and is totally convinced it's a scam by government and papers. I've given up worrying for her.
