Why was the Cheltenham gold Cup allowed to go ahead?

💰

ssd · 13/03/2020 18:34

Am on the train going home, just heard people talking about this, is it correct?

OP posts:
ssd · 13/03/2020 18:36

Probably Boris's chums were going

I watched it today (Ddad was here he loves the racing) even he couldn't believe the arrogance.

I lost a fiver on the cup, came second so I am a massive hypocrite Blush

PleasantVille · 13/03/2020 18:39

All sporting events are allowed to take place, cancellations are up to the individual governing bodies atm and racecourse seem to be choosing to carry on.

PleasantVille · 13/03/2020 18:41

Probably Boris's chums were going

All of the over 60000 attendees each day were personal friends of the PM apparently.

Loppy10 · 13/03/2020 18:57

Because our clever British scientists know more than the experts in the USA, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Australia, and the World Health Organisation. None of them have thought about flattening the curve by taking precisely zero action like our Brave government. Instead they are foolishly putting reducing their death count and reducing infections by closing schools and banning mass gatherings. How quaint! T

Greed and stupidity?

Maighdeann · 13/03/2020 19:24

Because the bookies are massively powerful entities who have a big sway with the government?

AdoptedBumpkin · 13/03/2020 19:32

The inconsistency between different events is barmy.

ibizarocks · 13/03/2020 19:36

The government wouldn't want to upset the bookies. It's all about cash

ssd · 13/03/2020 19:37

The world must be laughing at us.
First brexit then this shambles.

OP posts:
mumto2teenagers · 13/03/2020 19:41

I was surprised it went ahead given the number of people who attend.

Maverick66 · 13/03/2020 19:43

Money talks and buys privileged people what they want and let's face it ...privileged people own the race horses

AdoptedBumpkin · 13/03/2020 19:50

We do seem to be getting mixed messages from Government.

Indecisivelurcher · 13/03/2020 19:50

It's crazy. There are known cases in Chelt. You're so packed in at the races, the wash facilities are extremely limited, and people travel from all over the country and then home again, taking whatever they've picked up with them. The word on the street is all the schools in Gloucestershire are expecting to close next Friday, they're just trying to push it back to legitimately run it into Easter, in order to make it a solid month off.

pussycatinboots · 13/03/2020 20:02

Uttoxeter is on tomorrow (Midlands National) and Kempton AW.

Racing hasn't stopped.

MoaningMinniee · 13/03/2020 20:07

Racing is funded by the betting industry. People who gamble are inherently thick, the only winners are the bookies. The only trouble is I live in a fairly major centre for race horse training stables and all those stable lads and lasses will have been sneezing their way round my local supermarket!

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 20:10

Ssd. Au contraire most country's agree with brexit except the eu ones.

They were applauding us. But now I would be very interested to see what other nations are saying.

They probably feel extremely sorry for us and pray that us poor brits can wash our hands well.

topcat2014 · 13/03/2020 20:39

Just driven through town and it kiss heaving, people everywhere

LolaSmiles · 13/03/2020 20:45

Greed and stupidity?
Greed, stupidity and money.

After all if a few wealthy folk get a bit poorly they can go into their nice private hospitals as soon as they get a sniffle and get looked after, meanwhile the prime minister tells us plebs we should prepare to have our loved ones die if one were to be dark and cynical, probably to manufacture complaints about a stretched NHS so they can capitalise on it and sell it to their friends and financial backers
