Coronavirus - Am I going mad!?

Orange89 · 12/03/2020 23:27

I’m confused why most people I’ve spoken to (friends, family, neighbours) aren’t worried about Coronavirus!? Places are going into lockdown and Boris has said we will loose loved ones early!!! My dad is in his 60s and has a low immune system (who also happens to be no more worried about this) but surely most people have someone elderly in their lives they’re concerned about?! It’s putting my life on hold , I won’t go the gym or take my 2yr old to the creche / soft play or hug my poorly dad. I think the most worrying thing for me is that it can be passed on unknowingly to someone it could be serious for. It’s driving me insane but am I alone??

@orange89 what would you suggest as an alternative? If the politicians say yes panic then riots will happen and public safety will be a major issue. There is no vaccine yet so no way to stop this. If you were in charge what would you do?

Orange89 · 13/03/2020 04:57

@Thepigeonsarecoming not suggesting lockdown nor am I trying to run for PM - possibly the worst job in the world right now!! It’s a dilemma of course it is, which is why leaders are handling it differently. Actually feel bad for Boris , he looks terrified.

I am worried about it but I don't think there is a need to panic. When people panic they become selfish ie stockpiling toilet roll, rice, pasta, hand sanitizer etc. Leaving none for those more vulnerable.

And also I don't actually know what to do about it so I am just going about my daily life. Do we know for sure how to prevent it?

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 13/03/2020 06:14

@StillDisappointed where are you seeing that map please. My sil is stressing about mil & I think seeing recovery rates may help. Thank you

TheOrigBrave · 13/03/2020 06:15

Can you move this to coronvirus topic

adaline · 13/03/2020 06:20

People are worried but most people can't just stop living their lives because of it. DH and I are both self-employed so until one of us has symptoms we'll still be going to work unless the government places the country on lockdown. We do have savings but giving up work for weeks on end is just not possible. We have clients and jobs and if we let them down then we're screwed in the future.

Plus, what will worrying achieve?

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 13/03/2020 06:23

I’ve got a headache, sore throat, tickly
cough but no temperature, aches everywhere. Not sure whether should self isolate or not...

tallah · 13/03/2020 06:25

I have been worried about this since since this min it got the news in Wuhan. Been told by so many I'm overreacting, it's just flu etc etc! BUT now everyone )who I know)is the same as me. Obvs I can't say I told you so in a situation as grim as this, but this stiff upper lip bullshit has put everyone in danger as they've all been going around like normal, not being extra careful with germs and so spreading it! I wish more people had listened to us worriers

tallah · 13/03/2020 06:27

When people say there's no point in worrying! That gets on my nerves! Ok then love I'll just tell my brain to stop worrying then, since it's pointless!! Ffs! A lot of people are faking it by the way OP!

tallah · 13/03/2020 06:29

@StillDisappointed that is a great thing to share, thank you! Where is it from please? It does help us worriers to see those figures, if they are true

MyOtherProfile · 13/03/2020 06:38

I'm not worrying about it because that doesn't help. I'm aware it could hit any of us, and am making sure we all take the right precautions here but other than that I'm trying not to dwell on it and carry on enjoying life. Even if we have to self isolate I'm determined to make the best of it and not worry if I can at all help it.

Clutterbugsmum · 13/03/2020 06:44

I get why some people are worrying, but you do need to look at the bigger picture. The levels of infection in the UK is a lot lower then Europe over the same length of time.

Now whether it's because we don't live as closely with our neighbours as many other countries or because we don't socialise as much I don't know, but we don't seem to be getting the same number of cases.

I saw a graph yesterday comparing the UK to Italy and while there infection rate is rising and rising where the UK seem to be very level with a couple of peaks in the last few day but still a lot lower then Italy.

I'm not sure that the PM could shut down schools ect as it would plunge the country into recession and they need to do everything they can to stop that from happening for the longer term.

ChasingRainbows19 · 13/03/2020 06:50

I work in the NHS and I'm worried.im lucky I'm healthy but it could still floor me. More suspected cases aren't being treated in specialist centres or wards anymore just isolated within hospitals and although plans are in place I'm not sure it can cope with the numbers Italy showed.

My dad has lung conditions and he is isolating at home. I'm not visiting as I'm going to come across it at work without a doubt! Not risking it even with all the infection control procedures.

HardWorkShy · 13/03/2020 07:38

I saw a graph yesterday comparing the UK to Italy and while there infection rate is rising and rising where the UK seem to be very level with a couple of peaks in the last few day but still a lot lower then Italy.

They aren't testing people as a rule in the UK, so those figures aren't accurate. I know two people in Canada who had not been abroad/had no risk factors who were immediately tested when they showed symptoms. Meanwhile, we're being told to not even bother calling 111 unless we're at death's door.

BluesPurplesLilacs · 13/03/2020 08:01

I feel I’m going mad too.
I suspect I have (undiagnosed) ocd. My dc does has diagnosed ocd and it is genetic.

This is putting me into a zone of anxiety that I have not felt before. And I feel others are not taking it seriously.

But the official advice is so difficult to follow correctly and has so many holes in it. I can’t stop analysing different scenarios, both trivial and complex.

And when things do go back to normal I will have lost a lot of trust in people. Those who don’t take official advice seriously. Those who aren’t diligent over hygiene in everyday life. And those who are supposed to be experts and leaders in our society and have lost all credibility.

Orange89 · 13/03/2020 08:02

@tallah I completely agree with both your points. People can’t tell people not to worry it’s their feelings! Also feel I have a big dose of ‘I told you so’ coming up with all the doubters. Although obviously I won’t say that! Hmm

@TheOrigBrave sorry someone else has mentioned this but I’m not sure how to do this Confused

OP posts:
Orange89 · 13/03/2020 08:30

@BluesPurplesLilacs

This is exactly how I feel!! I’ve developed anxiety and OCD over this. Is almost like a blizzare obsession and I’m annoyed by some people who seem really unbothered by it. One of my friends actually said she wants to catch it so she can have time off work so not bothered by hand washing Angry I hope she’s in a very small majority but I fear she’s not!!

Penguin I think you should definitely self isolate to be on the safe side. I hope you feel better. Flowers

TheOrigBrave · 13/03/2020 09:04

Thank you Orange89
I think you need to ask MNHQ to move it.

I've hidden the topic as I use MN as a break from the seriousness of life.
Not that I am dismissive or in denial, but we all need a break.

Take care

Theyrecomingtotakemeawayhaha · 13/03/2020 09:15

I think a lot of use aren't worrying to much because we know it is going to get a lot worse. We have no immunity so we are only delaying it at the moment,we can't stop it but perhaps we can control the levels at which it happens. We need a flatter peak over summer so that the NHS has less flu patients so more capacity and then hopefully some degree of immunity in the general population to slow spread down a bit more.
