To say that normal bar soap is ok

Handwash is selling out everywhere so keep in mind that you can use bar soap, shampoo (with sodium laureth sulphate), shower gel or face wash if necessary to wash your hands.

Yes I don't understand this obsession with liquid soap

GrumpyHoonMain · 12/03/2020 19:10

Alcohol needs to be added to kill viruses. That’s why santizer is being sold out. Handwashing is just to clean off any droplets.

Beesisabuzzin · 12/03/2020 19:12

This is why we need all children to have a decent understanding of science and how it applies to day to day life. Bar soap far better than antibacterial gel. If you run out of soap, just wash your hands with washing up liquid.

PineappleDanish · 12/03/2020 19:13

That is completely and utterly wrong.

Yes, this is what I have told my dc who would bankrupt me with the amount of handwash they were going through. We switched to bars of soap which I have been stockpiling for years from unused Christmas gifts. Better for the environment too because less plastic packaging.

Beesisabuzzin · 12/03/2020 19:13

GrumpyHoonMain

That's actually factually inaccurate

CatBatCat · 12/03/2020 19:13

I started making cold pressed soap as a hobby a few months ago and I've got cupboards full of the stuff so I'm everyones friend at the minute after giving it to anyone who wants some Grin

isabellerossignol · 12/03/2020 19:14

That's directly in contrast to all the advice I've seen that says soap and water works better than any sort of sanitiser.

I'm a soap bar obsessive so I am still working my way through the stuff I brought back from holidays last year. Nothing gets your skin clean like bar soap and it's nowhere near as harsh on my skin. Liquid soap strips the skin off my hands. Especially the big brands like Radox and imperial leather.

Bluewavescrashing · 12/03/2020 19:14

Sanitiser is being sold out because people are busy, out of the house, or lazy.

Reallybadidea · 12/03/2020 19:15

That is completely and utterly wrong.

Yup. But that level of ignorance explains why sanitiser is all sold out and people are nicking it from hospitals Angry

Caplin · 12/03/2020 19:15

Soap can be better because of the way you handle it to lather up. Some people get complacent about anti-bacterial soap, they think it works miracles and don’t wash thoroughly enough.

Fishcakey · 12/03/2020 19:15

Any soap is fine, you are washing the virus down the drain .

ArtisanBreadBin · 12/03/2020 19:16

@GrumpyHoonMain I think you need to do some more research on that. Hand washing will wash viruses off your hands. It's not about killing them, it's about decontaminating your skin.

Hand washing is superior to hand rubbing.

dementedpixie · 12/03/2020 19:17

Soap, shower gel, bubble bath, etc would all do the same job as handwash. It doesnt have to be antibacterial either

Sertchgi123 · 12/03/2020 19:18

A bar of soap is just fine.

piscesangel · 12/03/2020 19:18

@GrumpyHoonMain in the midst of a pandemic you need to educate yourself before posting on a public forum

just5morepeas · 12/03/2020 19:25

Personally I much prefer bar soap. It washes away cleanly and leaves no residue and so dries skin out a lot less in my opinion.

I stopped using shower gel/liquid soap some time ago because of skin problems and my skin is miles better and not dry. I don't need to use hand cream half as much as I used to. And it's much better for the environment.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 12/03/2020 19:27

Washing up liquid works too if you are really stuck.

Beesisabuzzin · 12/03/2020 19:27

Viruses have a fatty outer layer which is why a good hand wash with soap, be it bar, liquid or washing up liquid is perfect.

BigFatLiar · 12/03/2020 19:43

washing up liquid is perfect

Tell the kids! See if there's a rush to do the washing up.Smile

coconuttelegraph · 12/03/2020 19:44

How can anyone have managed to miss all of the information that hand washing is better than sanitising

PineappleDanish · 12/03/2020 19:46

How can anyone have managed to miss all of the information that hand washing is better than sanitising

this level of general ignorance is scary.

DoubleAction · 12/03/2020 19:47

Bloody hell. How many times has the science been explained in the last few weeks and yet people here are still trotting out complete nonsense as absolute fact

OP is completely correct. Wash your hands with soap and water. Any soap.

Bloomburger · 12/03/2020 19:51

Shampoo, persil anything that lathers can be used and us far better than gel for decontamination.

Ex NHS. Been to gawd knows how many infection control seminars.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 12/03/2020 19:54

If this carries on for much longer I'll be going through my drawers for all the bars of soap I've stuck in them over the years to make my clothes smell nice...
