Vulnerable people or the economy?

Updating the spreadsheet even as I speak.

OP posts:
RoseAndRose · 12/03/2020 21:01

Bit of a false opposition.

Don't most people care about both?

SorrelBlackbeak · 12/03/2020 21:08

Both have to be protected. Austerity is supposed to be responsible for 130,000 deaths, shutting down the economy too early could mean austerity on steroids later.

AuntieStella · 13/03/2020 06:53

I've just seen an interview with omeone who works in tourism in Edinburgh. Already talking about small businesses going bust because of cancellation rates

Agree that the deaths consequent to austerity could easily be replicated. Those lives matter just as much as those who die directly from the diesease.

If caring about both makes me a cunt, you can stick me too if the spreadsheet

Defenestratethecat · 13/03/2020 07:10

I’m worried about my 91 year old mother and about my business tanking (cancellations, bookings down 82% on same period last year) am I only 50% cunt?

SoupDragon · 13/03/2020 07:14

So, with your clearly superior wisdom, what do you think should happen, OP? From where I'm sitting, there is no easy or 100% correct decision. I don't have a host of experts behind me though, maybe you do.

Greysparkles · 13/03/2020 07:14

Yup. I'm obviously a cunt then.
How very dare I care about myself and my family. Being self employed and living hand to mouth. How dare I be so concerned about having no money come in, not being able to pay my rent, feed my kids.
This isn't an either or situation. Alot of posters here seem to want the world to shut down, and fuck the poor. Like usual.

DoubleAction · 13/03/2020 07:18

If you feel so strongly about the vulnerable people you could always self isolate now. Oh you can't do that because you might lose your job but you want the Economy shut down so loads of people lose their jobs? Yes quite cuntish.

How is the care of the vulnerable people going to be paid for if the economy is wrecked?

KatherineJaneway · 13/03/2020 07:19

Vulnerable people or the economy?

It has to be a balance of both. I have vulnerable family members but also friends and family who are self employed / contractors. This virus is unprecedented in recent history and there is no manual or guidance as to what the right decisions are.

MediocreOmens · 13/03/2020 07:19

Oh I thought this was going to be about it highlighting selfish people like the woman at work who thinks this hand washing thing is a waste of time or the woman who delighted in telling us she’d come back from Northern Italy with a sore throat but “life must go on”. I think it’s very possible to care simultaneously about people and the economy.

Alwaysreadyforbed · 13/03/2020 07:27

So when we go into severe austerity measures, you won’t moan, OP?

FarTooSkinny · 13/03/2020 16:22

Is there room in your cunt spreadsheet for those cunts who know fuck all about epidemiology but feel justified in calling other people cunts just because they don't like them?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/03/2020 17:21

I will be self isolating, because I don’t want to die just yet. Don’t particularly want to leave my kids without a mum.

The government finds money for all sorts of nonsense. Pretty sure it could find the money for lockdown: other countries seem to be doing so.

Once you start deciding the economy is more important than people we are on a very slippery slope.

OP posts:
Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 13/03/2020 17:31

But as people are explaining - the economy is about people too. Damage it badly, and that could lead to deaths. There are no easy answers because we are in unprecedented territory.

Bellyfullofbiscuits · 13/03/2020 20:05

How are you going to pay your bills ?

AnneLovesGilbert · 13/03/2020 20:07

You’re apparently statistically more likely to go bankrupt than die of it. Coming out the other side of the epidemic to find no one’s got a job and no one’s paying taxes helps no one.

DoubleAction · 13/03/2020 21:26

Who's supporting you through this period Op?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/03/2020 23:56

So every other country can support their citizens through lockdown but not the UK?

We are self supporting anyway. We sold up our business and retired early because of my health.

OP posts:
Dongdingdong · 14/03/2020 05:01

We are self supporting anyway.

FFS

AccountAntsy · 14/03/2020 05:04

The economy is about people. It’s possible and reasonable to care about both and pretending otherwise identifies the naive cunts.

AccountAntsy · 14/03/2020 05:05

We are self supporting anyway. We sold up our business and retired early because of my health

That sounds dangerously like “I’m alright jack” cunt speak.

BluesPurplesLilacs · 14/03/2020 05:08

I think it is more ignorance than just being a cunt.

And I think you can, and should care about both vulnerable people and the economy.

So we are keeping home as much as possible but we do need to work so we have to go to that.

As I read somewhere the best advice is to act like an infected person yourself, keep away from others and maintain your hygiene.

DoubleAction · 14/03/2020 06:49

But if you're staying at home, you're not supporting the economy Purplelilacs

BluesPurplesLilacs · 14/03/2020 21:17

I think staying home now does support the economy. Slows things down.

Instead of it blowing up with a whole lot of infections at the same time, bringing workplace closures and issues where people either don’t get sick pay or have their shift cancelled etc.
