To think not every coronavirus discussion

Should be moved to the dedicated topic?

I think it’s pretty clear to the majority by now that this is in every respect (economically, politically, and socially) a major issue. Even if you believe “it’s just a flu” and “media hype” or “a conspiracy” you probably noticed lots of stuff has already happened in reality as a result.

It seems a bit childish to pretend to ignore it and to give legitimation to those who want. Like if every cancer related question was moved to health topic or every domestic violence question to relationship.

@Shinycat

There needs to be room for people to discuss Coronavirus though- it's going to be an epidemic and the policing of 'AIBU re. coronavirus' threads is getting a bit much really! There might be some "seriously bat-shit people" on the threads but there are also normal people asking whether to send their kids to affected schools; whether to self-isolate after coming back from Italy or whether to be concerned about their COPD/heart condition when it comes to Covid-19.

It's not a topic that anyone feels completely comfortable with but people can just ignore threads if necessary.

YABU.

Glad to see all the coronavirus threads moved.

I was getting so sick of seeing them on AIBU that I was thinking of staying away from mumsnet for a month!

Thank GOD they made a new topic for it.

There are some seriously batshit people on those threads!

Isla727 · 11/03/2020 01:23

Moderators- please could you leave some AIBU re. Covid-19 threads up because it doesn't really help for us just to pretend it's not happening!

ChicChicChicChiclana · 11/03/2020 02:01

Isla - why do you have a problem with a topic devoted to corona virus? The threads aren't being deleted or hidden. You aren't explaining your reasoning very well.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 11/03/2020 02:06

If you post about the Coronavirus outside the safe space you’ll spread the disease. Now you’ve infected me and many others just reading about it. Must upgrade my Norton software via a floppy disk

Isla727 · 11/03/2020 02:11

Hi Chic, I think it just feels like censoring and that it's as though people who are concerned about the Coronavirus are being treated as illogical and as though they are scaremongering when actually it's a current and relevant situation for general discussion rather than just a specialist 'health' topic, which are typically only relevant to a minority of people.

BitOfFun · 11/03/2020 02:52

It is not being censored. The CV topic is as valid as any other. If it stops AIBU being clogged up with coronavirus hysteria, I'm all for it.

Most people won't have hidden the topic (but it's their right to if they wish), and there is the entire rest of the online media to inform and educate too.

I'm quite unsettled at the thought of mumsnet being the main news source for some posters, to the extent that they think nobody will know what's going on unless it's blaring at them from a parenting chat forum. Read a paper, watch the news, look at the government website, ring a helpline, whatever!

AIBU is not the oracle.

SpareASquare · 11/03/2020 03:11

They have absolute right to access to all information, not just the pieces cherry picked “by experts” to form “the right opinion”
Do you mean like “a doctor on Twitter” or “an Italian on Facebook” like we’ve been seeing? 😂

Please, please let’s keep it all together in its own ‘special’ corner!

jmcg2015 · 11/03/2020 03:19

There already is such a thread, the problem is it is given extra legitimacy by the nature of it existing. There are links to information etc, but that doesn't make that information correct - that's the problem. It's full of panic and utter nonsense

ChicChicChicChiclana · 11/03/2020 04:26

Really, there is no censoring! I honestly don't understand the fuss. If someone has a specific question about corona virus, what better place for them to find it than all in one place?
