Will pregnant women be told to stay home?
ClassicallyConditioned · 10/03/2020 17:58
I've seen on the news that vulnerable groups will be advised to stay home within a week or two. Do you think this will include pregnant women?

So does that mean children in vulnerable groups as well?
Problem is your isolating the vulnerable people but the people that are not vulnerable who live with them cant isolate so in practice I dont know how good it will be.

No. It’ll be those with conditions known to increase your risk of being seriously ill or dying. That does not include pregnancy
It’ll be those over a specified age, those with existing respiratory, cardiac and (possibly) renal conditions. those with cancer, and those with certain other immune conditions
I fall into one of those groups, and a friend who is a relevant HCP today sent me advice on social distancing, and I expect it’ll need to get even stricter at some point.

It's not an unreasonable question, given that pregnant women are more susceptible to other viruses such as flu (hence pregnant women are considered a high risk group eligible to NHS flu jab). Some viruses are also vertically transmitted to the fetus and fevers during the first trimester can in rare cases be linked to birth defects.
I wouldn't be overly concerned though OP as the early indications for this virus are that it's unlikely to be transmitted across the placenta to the baby, and that pregnant women do not appear particularly vulnerable in this case.
