Swabbing anyone coming into the country at the airport???

OP posts:
gettingfedupagain · 08/03/2020 09:36

Because it's already here and we will all get exposed to it at some point

onalongsabbatical · 08/03/2020 09:44

gettingfedupagain but we are supposed to be containing and delaying it, right? OP you are right - apparently they are not even doing temperature checks which ARE happening almost everywhere else on the planet! It's negligent.

AmIAPenguin · 08/03/2020 15:26

Our government is either stick its head in the sand or it’s so determined to show all is fine it’s becoming negligent. Why is it allowing mass gatherings of people to still go ahead?
Why with people on a bus who turn out to be infected do we not have the driver in a hazmat suit? Because to do so now would admit we were wrong the first time.
The person who got a taxi to the hospital and tested positive, the Uber driver was told to keep on working as he only sat in the car with her for 15mins, bonkers.

Reginabambina · 08/03/2020 15:28

I’d assume they don’t want to waste tests?

CheekyMango · 08/03/2020 15:30

It... Is... Not... Logistically... Possible....

Hercwasonaroll · 08/03/2020 15:30

Waste of tests?
Economically not worth it?

It's here anyway. Why do random people think they know more than the public health officials?!

NotTerfNorCis · 08/03/2020 15:30

Is it possible to drive a bus in a hazmat suit?

DressingGownofDoom · 08/03/2020 15:32

Because if they tested that many people by the time the results came back they'd have recovered or died from the virus

PutYourBackIntoit · 08/03/2020 15:34

I have to agree. I really want my DD tested but we don't fit the specific criteria.
How many people, especially kids with mild symptoms will go to school tomorrow, dosed up on Calpol, most with regular bugs, small percentage with Covid, spreading it around which could be fatal to a high risk person, just because govt promote head in the sand guidelines re. community transmission.

EnidBlyton · 08/03/2020 15:41

reduce panic?

EnidBlyton · 08/03/2020 15:42

i trust public health officials

EnidBlyton · 08/03/2020 15:42

temperature checks are not conclusive

Cacaca · 08/03/2020 15:46

Ffs it’s already here - even then if someone infected is on a flight and infects other passengers they won’t be showing symptoms when they land will they.

scaevola · 08/03/2020 15:50

Because there are well over 9 million arrivals per year.

If evenly spaced that's well over 24,000 a day.

Where are you going to conjure up the extra lab capability for that.

Bear in mind that current capacity is just about keeping up with tests of the symptomatic who have plausible exposure (own travel or contact with known case) plus designated 'sentinel' cases (all respiratory patients from specific GP practices, aimed to show when widespread community transfer is gaining momentum).

GalOopNorth · 08/03/2020 15:52

We’re exporting Coronavirus elsewhere now!
7 cases in Vietnam arrived from UK yesterday or the day before.

We have tens of thousands of cases here. We’re just not aware because we’re not testing for them ...

MillicentMartha · 08/03/2020 16:14

The Vietnam cases from the UK had first been in Milan, though.

crustycrab · 08/03/2020 16:42

Would you want to drive a bus in a hazmat suit? Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/03/2020 16:51

They always temperature check in Chinese airports, all the time. So they have the means. How many of those temperature gun thingies would we need? Thousands. And I bet they're made in China so not available right now.

AmIAPenguin · 08/03/2020 17:22

Most of the other countries manage to have their drivers in hazmat suits. Surely you get specialists or army or people with experience to drive not just the local bus company.

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 10/03/2020 14:04

Surely it would be worth it to stop the NHS breaking down later when 1000's if people are critically ill/ in need of ICU?!

It's just a swab up your nose & in your mouth ffs.

OP posts:
MotherOfAllNameChanges · 10/03/2020 14:05

Cancel HS2 perhaps & use the money from that? 🤷🏻‍♀️

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 10/03/2020 14:07

Because temperature checks on everyone can give false negatives.
Because if we swab everyone we can't just ask them to sit and wait 24 /48 hours before results come in.
Because we might as well repel all boarders.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/03/2020 14:19

It's not about money, it's about practicalities.

Joe Blogs never has to think about getting 4000 temperature machines, charging them, training staff, finding somewhere to put the people with a temperature, transport to a facility to keep them, what to do with their families, interpreters, food to feed them, beds for them to sleep in. It's al just "why can't we..." and let someone else think of how.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/03/2020 14:22

It's just a swab up your nose & in your mouth ffs.

No, that's just the first step, each of those then has to be correctly tested, and there would need to be paperwork/contact details etc. You really haven't thought it through very far, have you?

SnoozyLou · 10/03/2020 14:42

We wouldn't have enough tests.
