AIBU to still consider going to Rome end of March?

DH and I haven't had a holiday together just the two of us in years. End of December, we booked 4 nights in Rome in a cute little hotel. DH is not fussed about Coronavirus, says it's just a nasty flu and everybody is bound to get it and will most likely be fine. I've been seeing pictures online about major Rome attractions being almost completely deserted. AIBU in thinking that with the big drop in tourists atm in Rome, it will actually be ok to go? Fyi, our bookings are non-refundable and we (stupidly) didn't take out travel insurance.

It’s selfish , everyone wants their fxxxxg holiday , we all work hard , we all lose money
You are not the only ones !

Grufallosfriends · 08/03/2020 15:29

OK it may just be a nasty flu to him, but what if you catch it and spread it around when you arrive back in the UK? My mum is in her 70s and if she catches it from people like you it could be the end of her

This. Very selfish attitude imo. As a society we should be working together to avoid bringing more cases into the UK!

@ListeningQuietly os your friend back from Italy? Just saw on the news that the whole of Italy went into lockdown. Hope she's ok.
I guess that settles our trip then, was hoping things would get better since China numbers have massively gone down. Hopefully things won't come to this in the UK.

A few things to consider

  1. When you get back you will need to self isolate for two weeks. Can you afford additional time of work.
  1. How would you cope if you couldn't fly home because flights were cancelled?
  1. Your holiday may be impacted by a lot of things being closed, who is working at the tourist attractions etc.
  1. You might catch it and it might be just like the flu but who wants the flu. Your holiday could be ruined if you develop symptoms before the end of your stay.

All in all I'd try contacting you hotel and seeing about transferring to a later date. Phone them directly and see what they say.

I work for a large UK company.
We've been told if we travel against government advice and then need to self-isolate when we get back to then UK, we won't get paid for those 2 weeks.

Strictly1972 · 09/03/2020 21:53

I’m going with yes given the news just out. Can’t believe a whole country is on lockdown. Just crazy.

Dusty01 · 09/03/2020 21:54

What is the government advice?

OhCaptain · 09/03/2020 21:55

God, is he always that selfish and inconsiderate?

DH works for an Italian travel company and they’re having a black out on all their attractions the moment so you mightn’t find anything open.

Let’s hope he doesn’t give the “nasty flu” to anyone who can die from it...

After showing DH this thread, we had decided not to go. And as I've mentioned before, we dont live in the UK. We live in Spain. Feeling very worried about it all. No precautions taken so far where we are, people around us seem very blasé about it Confused
Airport functioning as usual, no checks being done, no flights cancellations yet. Wondering if this is just the start of every country deciding g to be on lockdown?
Have contacted hotel, no reply yet, but we're not super hopeful. Ryanair hasn't sent an email yet.

MissMoiselle
The novelty is wearing off.
Her booked flight was cancelled. She's been stuck for two days and has had to buy four plane tickets in the hope that one will fly and she'll have to self isolate from her kids and friends when she gets back.

You've make the right call I think
