Is this Mumsnet or 2019-nCoVnet?

The only people who seem to be panicking are on here or DF readers

Instead of a Coronavirus Section I think @MNHQ need a 'non Coronavirus' section.

You need to remember that every second person on Mumsnet suffers from anxiety. That’s the link.

Tolleshunt · 09/03/2020 07:37

So just scroll past and don’t click, then, Russell.

PaulGalico · 09/03/2020 07:37

I contributed to one if those threads to suggest it was scaremongering. The response was exactly the same as Tolleshunt - that I was clearly anxious. Not anxious, just bored and amazed that people think, feel and put this stuff on the internet.

Tolleshunt · 09/03/2020 07:38

Yes, I do sympathise with those who suffer from anxiety. My experience of reading the threads, though, is that it the ostriches should are complaining most vociferously, not the anxious.

Actually the one bonus is that I've not heard the word Brexit for at least 3 weeks !

Whereas I had the misfortune to get a full house over the weekend as three 70 year old women managed to blame Coronavirus as the reason why Brexit won't be a success now.....outstanding work

TitianaTitsling · 09/03/2020 07:44

Same as pineapple it's the almost glee that those whipping the hysteria have that is the worst for me, although those that continually link it back to Brexit and leave voters and how they've 'got what they wanted/deserve it' if they catch the 'c-word' remind me of how silly some people can be!

Russellbrandshair · 09/03/2020 07:44

So just scroll past and don’t click, then

I am definitely going to do that now. But the front page is dominated by CV threads 😐

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 09/03/2020 07:44

As a pp implied, if we drew a Venn diagram of MN users and anxiety sufferers, the overlap would be huge, so it doesn't surprise me. It's annoying though.

Yes, of course we can scroll past but there's nothing to click on - most of Active Convos is made up of virus threads. I suppose I'll need to shuffle off and hide the topic

Youngatheart00 · 09/03/2020 07:51

Beats “line eyes please” though....

TwoZeroTwoZero · 09/03/2020 08:12

My list of hidden conversations is huge because I keep trying to hide them all. BTW, those who can't work out how to hide a topic, you have to be on the desktop site to be able to do it.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/topic-choice this is the link that lets you do it though.

AutumnCrow · 09/03/2020 08:19

1 You can hide a topic via your account settings / customise function

2 The national newspapers have front pages absolutely laden with Covid19 stories - MN is reflecting what's in the news, really

AutumnCrow · 09/03/2020 08:22

@TwoZeroTwoZero x posted - thanks for the link

TitianaTitsling · 09/03/2020 08:26

Good pointyoung or the aibu to never allow mil in my house again/go nuclear at the teacher ones...Grin

GloriaMumsnet · 09/03/2020 08:49

Funnily enough, we've moved this over to our Coronavirus topic!

Sparklingbrook · 09/03/2020 08:53

I wish we could have the AIBU vote function in the Coronavirus topic. Or AIO? Am I Overreacting? {grin]

YAO=You are overreacting.
YANO= Not overracting.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 09/03/2020 09:21

So is everyone contributing to the r/Coronavirus threads on Reddit from all over the world just suffering from anxiety as well? The medics, the front line doctors, the scientists presenting facts, data, graphs? The first responders in the US postings their experiences? The surgeons warning the UK to sit up and learn from what happening?
Are they all mentally ill as well?
Just wondering.

Sunshinegirl82 · 09/03/2020 09:38

I think it's possible to fall somewhere between going out and licking the railings and getting minute by minute, country by country updates 24/7 and berating the government for not putting the entire country on lockdown already.

Proportionate concern and action is appropriate. There are entire teams of civil servants and scientists who are busy working out what that proportionate action should be. I'm happy to trust them to do their jobs and follow their advice.

I say the above as someone who wouldn't trust Boris Johnson to run a bath. He is not running the show here.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 09/03/2020 09:46

Does anyone even understand what's happening?
The FTSE dropped 9% this morning.

9 PERCENT. If the coronavirus doesn't get you the economic fallout and loss of jobs will.

Either get prepared, or continue to stick your head in the sand and whine about “anxious” people popping your bubble on a Monday morning. In a fortnights time you’ll have a very rude awakening and in another month a thread on mumsnet will be the least of your worries.

Sunshinegirl82 · 09/03/2020 09:50

So what do you suggest we do?

AlternativePerspective · 09/03/2020 10:01

Friend of mine tried to order hand sanitiser on amazon yesterday. She genuinely needs this as she’s on dialysis and goes into hospital three times a week.

She found two 600 ml bottles, for ... ... ... £150. Shock

She then found four small bottles for £16 but the delivery charge was £27. Shock

In fact I am probably going to start a thread on this because I personally believe that hand sanitiser for those who genuinely need it because of medical vulnerability should be given it on prescription to avoid having to pay exorbitant prices on those wanting to cash in.

ACautionaryTale · 09/03/2020 10:04

I made the mistake of joining some facebook corona virus groups out of scientific curiosity - just to see how bat shit people could be......

And I can see how people with less reasoning ability or who are easily swayed can fall for some of the horse dung being peddled.

When I posted one scathing comment I got asked why I was on the forum if I didnt believe it was a bio weapon that would wipe the entire population out in 70 days,,,,,,,

I said I was "treating it as a scientific observation on an investigation into social media induced mass hysteria"

And got told I was a troll.

Rocketmam · 09/03/2020 10:05
  1. Hide the topic (which rather ironically this thread is now a part of).
  1. There is no step 2. If you choose to stick your head in the sand it's up to you, it's natural to be anxious about what is happening globally. I'd even say it's perfectly healthy.

I wouldn't say it was healthy to be mocking those concerned whilst seeming to ignore what is happening to the markets and our neighbours. Brits don't have a special immunity you know?

LEELULUMPKIN · 09/03/2020 10:07

I imagine that a lot of those on those threads who post “breaking” with such seemingly ghoulish glee, desperate to be the first to post bad news are the sort of people who would have been sitting with their kitting beside the guillotine.

LEELULUMPKIN · 09/03/2020 10:08

Ffs! KNITTING!
