How does anti-bac hand wash protect us against Coronavirus?

Am I missing something? All the hand cleansers etc attack bacteria. Most don't make any claims they can kill off viruses.

So why all this fuss about anti bac stuff, empty shelves, everyone using anti bac hand gel?

Govt minister on tv yesterday talking about Coronavirus & then using anti-bacterial hand wash as a defence in same sentence. It's nuts isn't it?

Alcohol really wrecks my skin, so I wear leather gloves when out and about, avoid touching my face with them, then remove them and wash when I get home. I also avoid standing too near other people - easy for me in a Scottish village, less so for a commuter on the London Underground, I know.
Any measures that reduce your exposure will be helpful in delaying the spread of the virus. Delay is important - if we can keep the number of infected cases from rocketing, the NHS will be better able to cope. And if we can keep numbers low until summer, the population’s immunity and vitamin D levels will be higher and the virus less able to gain traction.
