To think coronavirus is somewhat bringing out attention seekers?

A couple were on a flight yesterday back into the UK. Wearing masks. Taking photos of themselves with masks on flight.

So far, so cautious, perhaps. Many might do the same. Yet along comes the air steward with their meals. Masks come off, meals tucked into. Then masks go back on after meal...

...seriously? Are people actually thinking that the virus only attacks between meals? Or is this per my title, and the impending crisis is bringing out the usual attention seekers?

Elsewhere folk are posting pictures of heaving kitchen cupboards and infection prevention supplies, with the hashtag "preppers". Again, good on you for being safe, but really - why the need to boast that you managed to buy up the last three bottles of Cutan?

And while we're at it - what's with the smugness of the word "preppers" I ask? A term designed to make the individual concerned feel both self-satisfied at their (hardly remarkable) foresight, and also weed out those who haven't prepared, in order that the prepper can give them a good telling off.

We have a larder of stuff, but I have no desire to photograph it and share it. I don't need people to see me wearing a mask (and then ineffectually use it anyway).

AIBU to think it's really bringing out the attention seekers?

Yup.

Try sneezing on a bus. That’s gets them going too.

Whilst those of us in isolation, awaiting swab test results, are keeping as low a sm profile as possible for fear of being shunned.

It's absolutely ridiculous! No toilet rolls in our small Tesco extra yesterday 🙄 even in China they're allowed to go out shopping. People really need to get a grip. More people will die from flu this winter than the virus ffs! It's really doing my head in with all the panicking.

Bexbug · 04/03/2020 09:16

A lot of people who use social media are attention seekers, they think that they have some sort of celebrity status and assume that others are interested in their mundane lives.
Also the plonkers sharing pictures of their groaning cupboards will be the first to get robbed if the world goes to shit. If you prep keep your gob shut.

My DH can't get a hold of any dust masks for his job - painter and decorator so lots of sanding down walls etc! people are fools and so easily lead by the media.

@Anonanonanonanonanonanonanon I hope you get well soon, whatever you do have.

I've been taking the piss out of myself this week for feeling germy and being a wuss (I'm actually chronically ill and don't catch much now because I've been a hermit, in the last two months I've been working with children and hello, new microcosms) but the reality is definitely that if I was being tested for it, I wouldn't want everyone to know. That's based on some utterly vile things I've seen people I know, posting on SM. We are a first world country and I do believe we can handle this.

@Greggers2017 you must have a fully functioning crystal ball there to know that flu will kill more than this virus, perhaps consider letting the WHO know the final figures so that they can brief COBRA.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 04/03/2020 09:51

Anyone who collects and stashes food/household goods as a hobby really needs avoiding.
The gloating over being a 'prepper' Hmm.

Greggers2017 · 04/03/2020 09:51

@YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus you have seen the figures for the deaths in China haven't you? You do know that there have been a very small percentage of deaths? Are you not reading the same news as me? People like you are the ones causing the panic.

Bexbug · 04/03/2020 10:21

@Greggers2017 I think it will soon become apparent that the Chinese have not been honest with their death rates. Their reporting was skewed to start with because of how they report the cause of death. Once the virus starts infecting many more people we will find out a more realistic death rate. I’m not a panicker but I don’t think it’s going to be pretty.
The simple fact that this virus is being taken seriously all around the world tells me that it’s something very nasty indeed.

Greggers2017 · 04/03/2020 12:17

@Bexbug they always do it with new virus's look at the ones in the past.

bloodysqueakyeggs · 04/03/2020 12:21

Oh yes. Acquaintance on my Facebook list has been posting daily 'Day one in captivity, Day two in captivity' posts explaining what her and her children are doing while being holed up in the house in captivity Hmm

Cue multiple responses asking if they're in quarantine or self isolating etc etc etc. Much much concern. To which she doesn't reply.

Her child has chickenpox.

She's an attention seeking fool.
