Egypt to lead global stabilisation force in Gaza

Reported in The Guardian:

A European and US-backed UN security council motion to give a planned international stabilisation force robust powers to control security inside Gaza is being prepared, with the strong expectation that Egypt will lead it, diplomats have said.

The US is pressing for the force to have a UN mandate without being a fully fledged UN peacekeeping force and will operate with the kind of powers given to international troops operating in Haiti to combat armed gangs.

Turkey, Indonesia and Azerbaijan are also being billed alongside Egypt as the main troop contributors. Egypt is still being consulted on whether the force should be a full UN-led operation.

It is not expected that European or British troops will be involved.

I’m glad to hear it. I think it’s much better that help/ troops comes from neighbours rather than parachuting in Europeans/ Americans. I do hope Egypt is properly supported financially. They take on a lot in the region, (over a million refugees!) and are really important for stability.

Yes I think it will attract less criticism from everyone if the troops are from countries like Egypt & Turkey. But also yes I agree Egypt should be properly supported financially if they are leading the stabilisation force.

Finally, a sensible suggestion! Let’s hope it can be implemented quickly and with adequate funding.

I agree. Its important that US, or UK troops aren't involved. Whatever they do will be viewed at colonisers interference.

Egypt with others sounds good. There are plenty of extremely rich Arab nations tgat could support Egypt. Better to let Arab nations sort it out.
