Hamas preventing mass evacuation of Gaza City for propaganda reasons

Times of Israel reporting today that as the IDF prepares to expand its ground operations into Gaza City, Hamas is preventing civilians from evacuating south.

Defense officials estimate that 70,000 to 80,000 residents have fled Gaza City, most of them in the past 72 hours, even before an official evacuation order. Over the weekend, the number stood at about 10,000 out of the city’s estimated one million residents. Officials expect departures to continue as the IDF presses its campaign.

“The Hamas terror organization is doing everything it can to block the population’s movement southward in order to use civilians as human shields and for propaganda purposes,” one security official says. “In practice, the public’s barrier of fear has been broken, and tens of thousands of residents have managed to bypass Hamas checkpoints and evacuate the city.”

Meanwhile, the IDF releases a recording said to depict a Gaza City resident telling a Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) officer that Hamas is preventing civilians from moving south.

“We want to go south but Hamas is blocking the way,” the resident is heard saying. “They tell people: go back home, there is no evacuation, go back, go back — and people scatter.”

He adds that many residents are fearful, with some attempting to take side streets and alternative routes. According to his testimony, Hamas operatives are stationed along the seashore near al-Nabulsi junction in western Gaza City and other areas, blocking main roads.

The IDF says the testimony highlights Hamas’s use of civilians as human shields to deter military operations.

Maybe you mean it's not a UK source?

Not disputing their reliability. I'm just surprised it's not been broadcast by UK or US news sources, given that they are meant to be in support.

As the article seems like useful information, that should be widely known.

It’s almost like Israel are trying to get their story together for why they just HAD to, were FORCED to bomb more innocent children. Hamas are evil but the IDF take it to a whole other level!

The reality is starving people, injured people, child amputees etc… do not have the energy or the ability to evacuate. For those that do there are serious trust issues at play when someone who has in the past told people to evacuate and then bombed the evacuation routes, bombed their refugee tents etc... Would you trust these lying murderers and keep moving from place to place? The IDF and their supporters are a shower.

I think the UK media not mentioning this shows their bias against Israel.

This one particular child was used for propaganda purposes and it was considered a very relevant story at the time. Now it turns out to be a lie, suddenly it’s not important as only one child.

Aren't there tunnels the Palestinains could use?

I see that a lot of them are accessed by ladders in vertical shafts so not very inclusive, but at least they're often in homes and public buildings.
Though tbf I saw footage of sinwar's wife and children using one to leave Gaza just before 7/10 and she didn't look particularly nimble.

There were a couple that you could drive through so they could be considered 'accessible.'

Why are they killing so many then?

Lunalara · 06/09/2025 14:58

All of this tells me that there are lots of people that are willing to believe sources like the daily mail over organisations like the UN and basic facts of the events.

Why? No one has quoted from the Daily Mail.

The UN which seems to have some sort of agenda against Israel. The amount of hyperbole that this institution continually emits against Israel is incredible. The boy who cried wolf is a good comparison here as people are tuning out of the continuous use of cataclysmic terms in this war that never quite reach reality.

The UN isn’t issuing statements lightly. Their reports are based on verified evidence from the ground, including mass civilian casualties, destruction of homes, hospitals, and denial of essential supplies. Dismissing it as ‘hyperbole’ ignores actual human suffering. Tens of Thousands of children are starving and being killed- this isn’t a case of crying wolf, it’s a humanitarian catastrophe.

Where are Hamas going to go though? Who’s going to take them?

To another country to plan and execute further terrorist attacks either at Israel, allies of Israel or Jewish communities in other countries?

I can’t see how they can be allowed to leave tbh.

I never understood why Hamas leaders are being protected in other countries. Why is there not pressure from other governments to bring them to justice?

Are they considered as separate to the military arm of Hamas? How does that make sense?

Why haven’t the ICC issued arrest warrants against them?

They have made public statements that they want their civilians to die and they will carry out attacks on Israel again and again?

I also really don't understand why given the USA and Qatar are such close allies - why doesn't the USA get Qatar to stop hosting Senior Hamas Leaders. It doesn't make sense to me.

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 07/09/2025 07:47

Netanyahu is actually quoted in 2019 saying that anyone who wants to stop a Palestinian state should support keeping Hamas strong in Gaza.

There’s no evidence (yet) that he personally ‘funded’ Hamas, but his governments repeatedly approved Qatari cash transfers into Gaza knowing Hamas controlled the strip. He reportedly embraced this as a strategic move to divide Palestinian factions and hinder peace negotiations.

Why Netanyahu Bolstered Hamas

The Israeli prime minister followed a decades-old divide-and-rule strategy that fuels endless war.
