  • Iran accelerates hunt for successor after Israeli attacks
  • Two top candidates include Khamenei's son Mojtaba, insiders say
  • Potential rival Hassan Khomeini could present more moderate face
  • Supreme leader and family have gone into hiding, official says

Hassan Khomeini has come into the frame as a serious candidate this month because he could represent a more conciliatory choice internationally and domestically than Mojtaba Khamenei, according to 5 insiders.

By contrast, Mojtaba Khamenei's views echo those of his father on every major topic from cracking down on opponents to taking a hard line with foreign foes, the sources said - qualities they saw as hazardous with Iran under attack.

Hoping for the sake of the people of Iran that a more moderate successor is appointed when their current leader dies.

Several of the candidates long seen as possible successors to him have already died.

Hassan Khomeini is a close ally of the reformist faction that favours the easing of social and political restrictions. Sources say that he nonetheless commands respect among senior clerics because of his lineage. He is the grandson of the father of the Islamic revolution.

Fingers crossed, for the civilians, they get the peace and stability they deserve.

When I saw the title of this thread I wondered if Jeremy Clarkson was in the running - could be worse.

And on that bombshell... Trump says a ceasefire between Israel and Iran is "now in effect."

Are there no potential dissidents of a democratic outlook waiting? In exile? No-one of the stature of Alexei Navalny who could return and oversee real change? I apologise, I am completely ignorant of the possibilities that may exist but I'd be surprised if there were no democratic alternatives among the exiled diaspora. Surely the better alternative to more of the same. This is the opportunity.

Absolutely no fan of Donald the Orange pile of poo and his 'regime change' arrogance, but if it is, nevertheless, what transpires here, well it's a massive silver lining. For everyone.

Here’s hoping the people get a moderate and peaceful leader.

Not that I’m aware of… but agree Iran would benefit from a different type of leader rather than more of the same.

We don't speak of bombshells, there's already panic on the streets of Mumsnet.

Let's see what this ceasefire looks like ..from wherever we are, the view will vary. Thank you for your updates.

I know... I've probably triggered someone with that tongue in cheek comment.

Just got back from walking the dog to see things have taken a worrying turn.

With Israel's defence minister accusing Iran of violating the ceasefire and ordering 'powerful strikes' on Tehran.

Let's hope diplomacy can still win over a return to violence.

Turns out we have to rely on the Donald Trump brand of diplomacy:

"There was one rocket that I guess was fired overboard after the time limit and now Israel is going out. These guys [have] got to calm down," he says, speaking to reporters before heading to the Nato summit in The Hague.

He adds that he didn't like "plenty of things" he saw yesterday.

"I didn't like the fact that Israel unloaded right after we made the deal," he says referring to the ceasefire he announced earlier. "They didn't have to unload."

The president continues: "We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the fuck they're doing."
