I think this is sometimes forgotten when talking about the IDF. The small popiualtion of Israel means a significant proportion of its armed forces are women and as such are in danger of being wounded and killed.

I don't think this gender split in the IDF is talked about because it helps people to imagine the IDF consists solely of men when thinking of 'genocide' because women are in general more empathetic and less prone to violence against women and children.

Indeed when reporting of Plestinian casualties a distinction is made between women and men assuming women are non combatants (which in reality they are).

Women are just as capable of doing bad things as men are.

And yet most don’t, judging by crime stats.

There were many, many female SS officers too. It didn't hinder their cruelty.

Plenty of child and female suicide bombers throughout the middle east, though whether by coercion or indoctrination I hazard to guess.

PurpleChrayn · 30/05/2025 12:41

This just proves that what people know about Israel in the rest of the world is extremely limited, and usually negative.

Yes… that reminds me of the thriller series Bodyguard with Richard Madden.

Don’t know if you saw it but the ending was brilliant and relevant to this discussion.

Hamzah Saadah (born March 17, 2003 [age 22]), also known as Absorber, is a Palestinian You tuber and TikTok content creator who is primarily known for his wide variety of videos, starting with Fortnite gameplay videos.and Omegle trolling videos. He was born in New Jersey and currently resides in Houston, Texas even though he is of Palestinian descent and his family (including parents and grandparents) is from the West Bank, Palestine.

He's a kid sitting in his bedroom apparently talking to a couple of soldiers in a warzone. I don't take him seriously and I don't suppose they do either.
For balance, does he talk to hamasniks too.

He's clearly not an authoritative source, but he's spoken to more than a couple of IDF soldiers and young people from Israel. People like that shouldn't be it the army in the first place.

They've always needed to involve the whole population including women since they've always been in danger of attacks from the countries around them or various terrorist groups.

All countries have occasional disputes or conflicts with their neighbours. If you have serious issues with all of your neighbours all the time, then you are doing somethign wrong.

yeah you wouldn't want people in the army who might shoot people.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/lacking-haredi-manpower-idf-turns-to-womanpower-1-in-5-fighters-are-now-female/

More and more women in Israel are looking to join their defence forces and so it shows within Israel there is a continuing awareness of the threats the country faces. I think women are wanting to serve their nation and so to that end are not seeing the war in Gaza as genocide but as a just war of an embattled nation.

It is just another fact that is ignored when people try and a pint the IDF as some sort of amorphous mass of sociopathic genocide maniacs; they are not.

When the term genocide is used so freely I wonder who people see as the perpetrators of the genocide. Is it Israeli leaders, the armed forces or Israeli society in general?

You can see how unconsidered use of the term genocide leads to stigmatisation of Israelis and anti semitism more generally.

Or it's an indication that Israeli society has become more and more violently radicalised. Not an especially comforting thought.

You wouldn't want people labelling a whole population as legitimate targets and proud of how many kids they've killed.

Or maybe due to seeing their Husbands, children and Parents killed by air attacks?

People in the UK can only imagine. We aren't under constant bombardment by missiles, we don't have an iron dome and household/public bomb shelters as standard (anymore - though some houses still have them from ww2).
We have had suicide bombers and jihadists attacks but not on a regular basis like Israel.

I note that Ireland are very pro-palestinian. Experience in the UK has polarised many more in sympathy with Israel.

"experience in the UK" could you expand on this please.

Celebrating 7/10 despite the terrible images already being shown from it.

Calls to globalise the intifada at London marches, open support for hamas, hezbollah and houthis, vocal antisemitism including people recorded saying they wanted to kill all Jews. Tearing down and defacing hostage posters.
Attacks on people critical of hamas at London marches.

Before 7/10, groups of pro-palestinian protesters driving into predominantly Jewish areas of London calling out threats of rape and violence against Jews.

RinklyRomaine · 30/05/2025 18:38

In very broad terms, modern Israel was founded by and for survivors. Large numbers of whom were women, who played a huge role in resistance and uprisings. It was formed with a large standing defence force, because those survivors were mainly fighters, moving into yet another area without peace. There is a large tradition of fighting women.

Women can be as genocidal as men. Plenty of suicide bombers et al have been women. As a general rule, they are less inclined to standard murder.

Most fighters were reacting, not instigating. In a country with Israeli history, it’s naive at best to just shout racism. History for most residents isn’t far enough away to just give up.

Women kill. Mostly tho, men kill. Crime stats tell us that. There is nuance here but the anti semites only allow for nuance on one side.

turkeyboots · 30/05/2025 18:44

Military service at a young age gives Israeli women a different view of a career in the armed services. A friend deferred her service for a year as she was dreading it as she hated any form of exercise, but really enjoyed it in the end and stayed in for a few years. The IDF are good at making the army attractive to young women, which is very unusual and goes beyond Israeli cultural differences I think. Especially as my friend is a serious left winger who's out protesting her government right now.

You are blaming the Jewish state because its antisemitic neighbours want to destroy it?

If they were all so antisemitic, why would Israel choose to have a state right there? There were choices.
Palestinians welcomed them. It’s zionists behavior that led to this sort of relations. Try to be nasty to your neighbours and you will notice how they turn anti-you. It’s true for any country, any group of people.

I am shocked by seeing children burning and starving.
This is not unique in history, unfortunately. I just thought that it was the humanity’s past.

Jews are indigenous to Israel, where else would you expect them to go?

This is straight up inaccurate propaganda.
