The conversations here are about conflict in the middle East but I think the recent news below shows that as a state we definitely are aligned to one side of the conflict as quite simply Iran looks like it has sponsored an attack on the UK which could have included relatives of any one here.

Not only does Iran back Hamas but it looks like it is quite willing to export terrorism to the UK. Whether ultimately there needs to be a military response is yet to be decided but I am glad MI5 have revealed this.

As UK citizens we should not be blinkered at all about Iran's position and it's support of terrorism against all our interests.

Major terror attack 'was just HOURS away' before it was foiled by MI5

Counter-terror officers and Special Forces raided two suspected Iranian cells in a 'highly significant' operation to tackle growing activity by the hostile state in the UK.

I don’t think it will end if Hamas step down. Israel is planning to destroy whatever is left of Gaza now and potentially forcefully move Palestinians elsewhere - I don’t think it’s realistic to think that everyone in Gaza will just docilely go along with it.

Not that we know for sure what he’s doing as there doesn’t seem to be firm plan?

So how do you think it will end?

Well I don’t think it will end really, the conflict will ebb and flow for the foreseeable. The known plan is for Israel to have a sustained presence in Gaza now. Palestinians will be forced into a smaller area. Terrorist attacks will continue to be launched.

I can’t think of a best case scenario.

It will have to end eventually, just a case of how long it takes and how many civilians get killed in the process.

Just read an article in the Telegraph (behind a paywall). It says that on Sunday night the Israel security cabinet approved an expanded military offensive in the Strip as part of a new strategy of “conquering Gaza” in order to defeat Hamas.

From the article: Since October 2023, Israel’s tactics in Gaza have largely involved heavy bombardments followed by intensive ground activity to clear areas, before troops move on to other regions.

It led to criticism that the IDF was allowing Hamas to regroup in zones that had been declared cleared. However, in the fighting since the ceasefire broke down in mid-March the Israeli forces have made a greater effort to hold on to ground.
The new plan – which the officials said was meant to help Israel achieve its war aims of defeating Hamas and freeing hostages – also would push hundreds of thousands of Palestinians into southern Gaza.

Allowing for the “conquering of Gaza and retaining territory”, according to an official, the strategy would be scaled up incrementally.
It is likely that this would begin after an expected visit to the Middle East by Donald Trump, the US president, next week.
