Israel bans UN chief from entering country

Israel's foreign minister says Antonio Guterres has been banned from the country due to what he sees as anti-Israel bias by the UN chief.

Israel Katz said he had declared Mr Guterres a "persona non grata" in Israel.

"Anyone who cannot unequivocally condemn Iran's heinous attack on Israel, as almost every country in the world has done, does not deserve to step foot on Israeli soil," he said on X.

Mr Guterres yesterday condemned the "broadening of the Middle East conflict, with escalation after escalation" and called for a ceasefire in a statement that did not specifically mention Iran.

Is Iran's retaliation being used as the excuse Israel (and the US) need to further isolate themselves and invade other countries?

If i lived in Israel I'd be concerned about how bad my country is looking on the worlds stage.

...rather than the jihadist terror groups on your doorstep lobbing missiles and launching terror attacks.....ok

This.
I'm typically pro-Israel on the whole but their current crop of politicians are not doing them any favours in how they are now looking on the world stage. It is coming across as warmongering.

Israel considers UN antisemetic
their chief is banned
they don’t feel welcome in it

why are they part of the UN?

Because they want to considered part of the world community. However they're now going rogue with no semblance of abiding by international law. The US and other 'allies' offer a figleaf of legitimacy.

Sounds like Katz doesn't have the authority to do this - not part of his role

It's someone elses remit - ?Minister of Immigration or something

Do you think he cares ? Someone whose government doesn’t. Follow international laws and listens to other countries that are begging them for a ceasefire ?

Why would they not be? Its the organization for all the nations (clue in name) - how do you influence if you are not in the room? Inevitably they dont all agree on things & Israel is perfectly entitled to argue its case. This is such a weird comment that keeps cropping up on these threads.

Are they going to listen to what is coming out of it? Are they going to abandon West Bank?

or are they there only for what they care and what they don’t is antisemitism ?

Ilovetowander · 02/10/2024 16:54

There is an unwillingness to condemn those who attack Israel and talk around the issue. Israel has a right to defend itself.

Would you be a member of an organisation that, according to you, is prejudiced against you? I certainly wouldn't.
So not a weird comment, just a logical one.

Lets say I think international diplomacy works at a more complex level of diplomacy than the average MN thread on CITME. We can already see the way this one is going!

do Palestine , Syria , Lebanon and Yemen citizens have a right to defend themselves as well? Or is it only israel who is entitled to this right ?

So they’re there for what benefits them and the rest is antisemitism ,

I agree. They have gone from defender to aggressor, and in doing so have made themselves incredibly vulnerable. I worry that there will still be an Israel in another couple of years time.

100%.

PurpleChrayn · 02/10/2024 16:58

Lebanon has been lobbing bombs and missiles at Israel since October last year.

Palestine is bent on eradicating the Jewish people.

The Houthis the same.

Israel is not the aggressor here.

  • A meeting of UN Security Council on the situation in the Middle East is currently under way. Secretary- General Antonio Guterres reiterated his call for a ceasefire, warning: "Time is running out"

—-

Probably for things like this they’ve been banned from Israel : for seeking ceasefire as Israel is not keen on one

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 02/10/2024 17:04

The length of time the UN took to condemn the rape and sexual violence that happened on 7th October speaks volumes how they feel.

All of this. But they equally need to play the game to maintain the support of the west.

Absolutely no clue how you got that combination of words out of my post.

Lettherebejustice · 02/10/2024 20:34

It's such a typical move by Israel, extremely immature too. It has been condemned by the US with the criticism that Israel is doing itself no favours on the world stage.

Efacsen · 04/10/2024 12:16

Guterres and separately UNHCR are both on the Nobel Peace Prize committees short-list for this year

Do you mean another war or another massive attack similar to the 7th October one on Israel?

Ilovetowander · 06/10/2024 10:52

Israel has a right to defend itself. A year ago hostages were taken, it was the victim. Other countries have sought out terrorist organisations and that has been accepted- in my view this is the same, what's more in this case it is on areas which are in their own country
