With permission of @the7Vabo I’m going to open the second thread for the Israeli boycott thread

also , as I was the person that derailed with the comparison between anti Palestinian and anti Israeli comparison I wanted to apologise to the op of the other thread

I think the last thread ended in an extraordinary way. So the Adidas advertisement that referenced the 1972 Olympics was only alluding to the trainers of 1972 ?
@ConnieCounter Maybe Google 1972 Olympics and see what is the first thing that pops up..

The shoes that remember the 1972 olympics have been up for sale for a few months. Nobody has complained until Bella’s ad. They’re still up for sale. Adidas has apologised for using Bella. Not for the trainers itself. No outrage anymore for the trainers.

Wow imagine being quite happy to excuse using an antisemite in an ad for trainers celebrating a terrorist attack yet having a whole thread to boycott the only democratic multi ethnic state in the Middle East.

Can you provide evidence that Bella is antisemite ?.
also, can you provide evidence the shoes are celebrating a terrorist attack ?

thanks.

The trainers aren’t the problem. It’s the advertisement that’s the problem. It’s the use of the 1972 Olympics ( an event notorious for a terrorist attack) in an advertisement .
The trainers are not the issue- it’s the way they have been marketed.

No - the trainers are not celebrating anything- they’re trainers!
The advertising/ marketing references an event where people were killed and uses that to sell their trainers . Tasteless at best but in current circumstances worse than tasteless

Limesodaagain · 19/07/2024 22:30

I think part of the outrage I feel is not just that the advertisement was made - but that people like you don’t care about the offence that has been caused.

Anyway thanks for the thread ❤️.
Adidas appear to have removed all the models used in the campaign including Bella, perhaps they got legal advice that singling out a model could be seen as discriminatory, especially based on unproven accusations. #BoycottAdidas has been trending all day so there's been a backlash to their action.

Are people boycotting Adidas because they removed Bella or because of the nature of their advertisement?

Can I see the ad ? As I’ve only seen a pic of Bella with the trainers and a bouquet of flowers no references to the event as such.

Olympic 1972 is being used because they’re remembering the shoes that many athletes used to run in those Olympic Games (at least that’s what I’ve read in adidas website) and they’re bringing them back as retro trainers.

so the only event they are remembering are the 1972 Olympic Games. And this is with or without Bella.

At the beginning it was people who were offended by the nature of the advertisement. Last night it was mostly people that support Bella, so both sides (though the side that supports Bella is larger due to her social media impact).

this is the comment from the poster I was replying to

“excuse using an antisemite in an ad for trainers celebrating a terrorist attack”

apokogies , I should have added the ad celebrates the. Terrorist attack. As I still can’t see any connection. Of how the ad is celebrating a terrorist attack

arent these the sl 72 shoes that commemorate the Olympic 1972 games ? I’m not too much into adidas being honest so I’ve no clue but thought SL 72 was the model for the 1972 Olympic Games.. If that’s right then i was wrong in a previous comment when I said I really doubted that adidas would remove the trainers and can see why there is no more outrage about the trainers.

We agree they are referencing the 1972 Olympics - I think that’s a provocative reference in an advertisement. I can’t show you the ad. If you think it’s ok for an advertisement to reference an event chiefly remembered for a terrorist attack then we will not agree.

Bella Hadid didn’t create the advertisement - I don’t know if she was aware of the implications.

@BelleHathor the Info in my link says sl 72 rs shoes

I can buy that model in the uk
https://www.adidas.co.uk/sl-72-rs-shoes/IG2132.html

you can see I’ve not much adidas clue but thought they were the same ones of the ad (or is it the colour that Bella was promoting ? )

Scirocco · 19/07/2024 22:56

I think people should probably be more upset with adidas than with a model, really. Adidas decided to 'bring back' something in exceedingly poor taste and do a marketing campaign that reminds people of the reason for it being in such poor taste. Once innocent people have been murdered at an event, it's not really ok to try to profit from things referencing that tragedy. And to do it now of all times, when such things may be felt as particularly intimidating and distressing by the community targeted in both the 1972 attack and October 7th, really reinforces to me that this isn't a brand I'd want to support.

TBH I have no clue, I am a Nike girl (and my days of spending £50+ on shoes are long gone).

If they have been on sale since May perhaps they've trended as the Olympics are about to start?
This GQ article says that they were introduced in 1972 during the Olympics.

Putting the adidas issue to one side, I still have yet to read anything to back up the claim that Bella Hadid is anti semitic. It’s such a serious allegation to make but there doesn’t seem to be any substance to it.

I might be wrong about being sold for months but def they had been advertised for months.

My problem has been the trainer (among others), but it does look like many people only started caring because of the ethnicity/heritage and political views of a model employed for an ad campaign.

Exactly. It's an advertisement for trainers. A relaunch of 1972 trainers.

Yesterday's ICJ ruling really does re-inforce why there are people who are choosing to boycott Israeli goods.
Israel continues to flout international law and expect that the world should just stay silent about it.. nothing to see here.....
People will do what they can within their means.
The oppression of the Palestinians is one people are acutely aware of due to the decades it has been ongoing for
How much more must they suffer??? How many more generations must suffer from the oppressive occupation?

This 100%

Also someone further up lauded Israel for being the “only democratic multi ethic state in the Middle East.” I have a friend who worked with for UN in Gaza City and lived between there and Jerusalem and said Arabs are widely discriminated against. And that was before Israel started pounding Gaza to dust.
