The OHCHR has published the advance unedited report on Palestinian human rights in the Occupied Territories. It makes for difficult reading.

I have long thought that the threshold for genocide has been reached. I can't understand arguments against that, though most either don't understand what genocide actually is or don't believe that Israel has carried out the atrocities it has.

The sections on human shields and medical shielding are especially interesting. Horrific obviously, but interesting nonetheless. There's a ton of misinformation out there on those topics.

This is a list of human rights:

  • the right to life
  • the right to a fair trial
  • the right to privacy
  • the right to vote
  • freedom of expression
  • freedom of religion or conscience
  • freedom of assembly
  • freedom from torture, inhuman or degrading treatment and slavery

All of these are protected, for Palestinians, by their own governments. Not by Israel. Sadly, neither Palestinian government has chosen to provide these rights for it's citizens.

Focussing on Gaza, it's citizens are routinely killed, tortured, imprisoned without trial by Hamas. They have no freedoms of press, protest, expression, assembly or religion. They cannot form political groups. They cannot liaise with their neighbouring countries to promote peace. They cannot even vote.

These are the choices of HAMAS.

Then there are economic, social and cultural rights, such as:

  • the right to an adequate standard of living
  • the right to the highest possible standard of physical and mental health
  • the right to education
  • the right to work and to decent work conditions
  • the right to social security
  • the right to participate in cultural life and to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress

Again, these rights are controlled by Hamas. And are considered meaningless to them. They live as billionaires with private jets and Qatari palaces whilst the average citizen has very little. Their friends and Hamas members enjoy lovely standards of living with fancy cars, swimming pools and the latest iphones whilst others live within very poor standards.

The only real social security provided is a stipend a family receives if one of them kills a Jew or commits an act of terrorism, ideally dying in the process (which gets you extra cash!)

The only meaningful education or social services are provided by international aid organisations, and even those have been hijacked and infiltrated by Hamas to be used as weapons of terror and war.

Travel outside Gaza is via permit, issued by Hamas and Hamas alone. Those permits are very expensive with a very long queue. So as a result, Hamas members and their friends, travel freely but regular people do not.

In short, the "human rights" status of Palestinians is entirely the choice and responsibility of the absolute scum bags running it. And I am pleased at the prospect they will be removed and people might have a chance at not being run by murdering, thieving dictators.

Israel, and indeed Egypt, control one thing: their own defence. They have systems in place to tackle the tragic reality that Palestinian territories are engaged with active warfare with them and have been for decades.

Gazans cannot have "free access" to Israel because they kill Israelis and set of bombs. That has been proved a total of 2304 times now. They cannot have free access to import whatever they want, because they have historically used this access to kill people in the country next door.

People may prefer to victim / oppressor fairytale - but this is the truth. For Palestinians to have a great set of human rights protections and freedoms two things must happen:

  1. Stop trying to murder people
  2. A government who enshrine those human rights into their law

I hope for both.

Any comment on the report? Other than "BUT HAMAS!" if possible. It's the topic of this thread.

Any comment on the objective facts laid out in my post? Other than "BUT THE UN SAYS". Try a bit of critical thinking.

Israel doesn't provide "human rights" to Palestinians.

That isn't how law works.

Unless you want Palestine to be governed by Israel?

In which case that would be lovely, and I am sure Israel would be delighted to enshrine human rights under law for all it's brand new citizens.

Until then, Hamas are the government of Gaza, and as part of the whole system of being elected as the government of a territory, you get to decide on the laws of it.

Israel is only interested in the bit where they don't get to bomb Israel.

ConnieCounter · 03/04/2024 18:05

I'll take that as a no.
