The USA has put a draft text before the UN Security Council, calling for an immediate and sustained ceasefire for the first time and specifically linking this with hostage negotiations.

The UN Security Council will vote on a US draft resolution later that calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the first time.

It's about time! I hope the US would finally stop vetoing ceasefire votes in the UN!

The resolution has failed. 3 votes against, 1 abstention. Russia and China reportedly opposed it.

Russia, China, and Algeria, as a matter of fact.

Out of these two, at least Russia and Algeria are endorsing an alternative draft by 10 of the non-permanent members instead (unclear when that will be voted on - might be later today or pushed to next week).

Essentially, the no votes are arguing that the text uses a lot of sophistry and convoluted language to not actually impose a ceasefire and that the whole thing is a cynical US ploy to keep on giving Israel the green light.

US, OTOH, is saying it's because of politicking and language around condemning Hamas.

Pathetic the lot of them 😡

Scirocco · 22/03/2024 16:18

And the Israeli government responds by extending its occupation in the West Bank.

How compassionate.

The tail is wagging the dog for sure here

Can anyone find the exact wording of the draft resolution? Is it usual not to publish it in full?

Technically, any and all votes at the UN are meant to be found here: https://research.un.org/en/docs/sc/quick/meetings/2024

That said, all links to the original docs - no conspiracy theories, applies throughout - appear broken for me at present.
