Israeli entry in Eurovision song contest is likely to be a song called 'October Rain' sung by trans-identifying 'Eden 'Golan'.

My previous thread was deleted for pointing this out.

Or does 'Golan' have a meaning as a word? Like the surname 'Black' say - which probably wouldn't be due to a family link to the place 'Blackpool', but rather both would be named after the colour?

keenforhelp · 08/05/2024 13:28

Go Golan! I love your song and will be voting for you :)

Well done Eurovision for having the backbone for not allowing any Pro-Palestinian paraphernalia. Totally unnecessary virtue signalling in a music festival.

It's absolutely astounding that people would even suggest Israel withdraw their entry. Israeli civilians have nothing to do with the conflict in Gaza, why is that so hard to grasp? I saw her on tv last night - she is just a young woman about to perform to a world stage and excited about having the musical night of her life. Nothing more, nothing less. I also watched a segment on the UKs entry, olly, and was equally dismayed that he has been subject to extreme pressure to withdraw.

Israeli civilians have nothing to do with the conflict in Gaza, why is that so hard to grasp?
But she's not that there representing herself is she she's representing Israel. She can enter any singing contest she likes, her citizenship doesn't matter but she is the Israeli entrant in this competition, why is that so hard to grasp?

Are you saying the Israeli army is a terrorist organisation then?

Because she wants to. She wants to represent her country. The country of Israel can not be reduced to the outgoing conflict in Gaza. It's citizens are still going to work, eating at restaurants, going to the cinema and yes, going to music events like Eurovision. Going about their daily lives as much as possible, in spite of the oncoming conflict. It doesn't mean they're not suffering from the loss of their loved ones or worrying about the hostages or despairing at the lives lost in Gaza. That's what people do . Look at the world wars or Ukraine, the world doesn't stop turning. That's the reality.

More votes for Israel then if people switch off. Go Eden! You are very brave!

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/02/israel-eurovision-contestant-palestine-protest-hotel-room/

She’s so brave isn’t she! I will certainly be voting for her.

its so awful to see such angry racist hate towards Jewish people. I really thought that people had changed since the Shoah but the mask has fallen off so many. They truly don’t see us as human.

My family are Jewish and watch Eurovision every year. My 9 year old told me that at least Israel would win this year because of the awful things that happened as people would have sympathy same as Ukraine. I didn’t have the heart to tell her.

i just hope that very soon the political climate will change so that the vile antisemites who have become so emboldened by the attacks on Israel will again become ashamed of their race hate. As they should be.

I don’t think it matters what they sing or who sings it. No country should be involved in something as frivolous as Eurovision at the same time as killing innocent people, especially one that’s not even in Europe .

Did you say that about Ukraine? What about the uk? We took part while being part of a coalition that fought Isis (at least 50,000 civilians dead in that part of the conflict). Did you say those things then?

or is it just Jews defending themselves you think shouldn’t be allowed?

Agreed. Good luck to her

She's just young. I hope all the big, brave virtue signallers feel good about protesting about her.

They are protesting about Israel competing in the competition, who is representing Israel is not the issue.

She's just young
What's the relevance of this?

Well she is competing, Eurovision want her and Israel to compete. End of story.

Poor thing is young - hope she will stand up to the pressure.

Are you infantilising an adult ?

I saw a video of Israeli supporters booing at the Irish singer yesterday during their performance . Hope they will stand up to the pressure as well

Give us a break, she had her eyes wide open going into the competition. Every artist competing is under pressure and being criticised for being there.

keenforhelp · 08/05/2024 18:24

Go Eden - don't buckle under the pressure lovey.

BeretInParis · 08/05/2024 18:31

There's a difference between protests and death threats. No one should be under fear for their life for participating (validly, I might add) in a singing competition. Only the Jewish participant faces such treatment.

Those wishing her dead are disgusting and should be ashamed of themselves.

I never watch it but I'm very surprised that booing is allowed. It does not seem in the spirit and must be off putting to the performers. Is it a regular thing to boo the singers, do you know?

I did not know she has received death threats. That's really shocking. Have they arrested the people responsible?

BeretInParis · 08/05/2024 19:40

I don't know @stormy4319trevor. It's bloody awful though. Her parents have even paid for extra security to keep the family safe while they're in Sweden.

The full article is here: Eden Golan receives death threats for participating in Eurovision - The Jerusalem Post (jpost.com)

For those who don't wish to follow a link, this excerpt from the Jerusalem Post has a little more info:

Eden Golan, the winner of Israel's "Rising Star" singing competition and who will represent the country at this year's Eurovision in Sweden, has been reportedly receiving death threats following the Israel-Hamas war.

Tensions are rising with Golan and the entire Israeli delegation to the singing competition this year, as they will be with three times the number of security guards in Malmo, Sweden, that usually protect the delegation under normal circumstances.

Golan received death threats directly to her Instagram account, Walla Celebs recently learned, with her associates saying that she will be harmed even before she goes on the big stage....

Her parents will also hire additional personal security guards at their own expense to protect themselves."

'I couldn't stop the tears': Eden Golan in tribute to the hostages before Eurovision

Eden came with good energy but couldn't stop the excitement when her song "Hurricane" was played, and the whole audience joined her in singing.

@BeretInParis That is alarming. I hope the people responsible will be caught. It sounds like security will be good. I have never watched Eurovision. I'm afraid the few clips I've seen were not my cup of tea musically, whatsoever. I always thought it was supposed to be light hearted, but it sounds anything but this year.

Does every artist get people making up things about their name and gender? And need extra security?

Scirocco · 08/05/2024 19:58

Tali, the finalist from Luxembourg, is Israeli too. Has she had similar security concerns or negative reactions?

BeretInParis · 08/05/2024 20:10

Apparently so, @Scirocco. Excuse the long link - I'm on my phone now - but this article details the abuse (and support) she's received. Don't think it's been as extreme as Eden's situation because not as many people know she's Jewish and / or Israeli. I wonder which of these aspects about her people hate the most?
