Conflict in the Middle East

To find the silence about UNRWA being Hamas hypocritical

1000 replies

Muthaofcats · 28/01/2024 07:35

I entirely understand the discomfort seeing images coming out of Gaza; but what I don’t get is those who choose to post about it on social media or campaign expressing their horror but being totally SILENT after October 7th (before Israeli had even responded), after evidence of the sexual violence suffered by those murdered in Israel and now, after finding out that UNWRA who they have all been sending donations to, are actually Hamas who perpetrated the atrocities.

Where is the outrage from these people at UNRWA?

Why are none of these vocal people not screaming from the roof tops at how horrendous this is !?! If it was true you care about humanity, why aren’t you horrified to learn you’ve all been donating to an organisation so closely linked to the rape and murder of innocent civilians ? (And this isn’t the first time unrwa has been linked to Hamas; their HQ is a Hamas building and they’ve famously been linked to training terrorists in their schools / got into hot water for removing the hollocaust from their curriculum)

if you are one of those white privileged women who posts on social media about a cease fire (I’m talking to those of you who have never been to the ME, or studied ME history and never taken up the cause of any of the other global conflicts); why is your outrage so one sided and blinkered ? Why don’t you acknowledge the horrors of the Israeli/ Jewish people too ? If you’re really the virtuous person you purport to be by taking up this cause, why don’t you care ? Or do you believe what Hamas did and are doing and promising to keep doing (murder all Jews) is justified ?

Genuinely find it bewildering.

4 people from UNWRA are currently accused of links.

Channel 4 television have reported no evidence of links.

Hamas are the official government of Gaza, of course UNWRA offices are/ were in a Hamas building, it's the government!

https://reliefweb.int/report/israel/opt-response-israel-unrwa-commissioner-general-report-a58557

"17. Particularly serious is the case of Nidal Abd El Fatah Abdallah Nazal, a Hamas activist from Qalqilya, who worked as an UNRWA ambulance driver before being arrested by Israel. Mr. Nazal stated that he used the ambulance to ferry arms to terrorists and exploited the freedom of movement he enjoyed as an UNRWA ambulance driver to pass on messages between the Hamas operatives of various towns.
18. Nahed Rashid Ahmad Attallah, an UNRWA employee in Gaza, was responsible for the distribution of assistance to refugees. Mr. Attallah admitted that he maintains ties with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), the Popular Resistance and Fatah in Gaza. Mr. Attallah disclosed that between 1990 and 1993, in the course of his work with UNRWA, he served these terrorist organizations, providing assistance to families of wanted terrorists. Mr. Attallah also disclosed that during the months of June and July 2002, he used his UNRWA vehicle to transport armed operatives of the Popular Resistance who were travelling to carry out a shooting attack against IDF at the Karni terminal and a rocket attack against settlements in northern Gaza. On another occasion, Mr. Attallah used the official UNRWA car to transport an explosive charge weighing 12 kilograms to Amer Karmout, another operative of the Popular Resistance. Mr. Attallah admitted that he used the UNRWA vehicle to transport the terrorists, because IDF does not search United Nations vehicles and that he would therefore be able to travel freely on the roads. Israel has taken measures to ease the humanitarian situation, in an effort to protect human rights, yet terrorist operatives and organizations wantonly exploit the humanitarian policy to carry out attacks, as shown above.
19. UNRWA workers have been personally implicated in terrorist activity. Over the last two years, a number of UNRWA employees have been indicted - and a number convicted - of terrorism. It is therefore apparent that Agency infrastructure, vehicles and resources have been abused for terrorist purposes."

This report is from 2003. So the UN are very aware of terrorist activity within their organisation. Let's not pretend otherwise.

Agreed.
I suppose the next question is what to do about the humanitarian crisis ? Is it acceptable to pull funding?

If Israel's concerns had been taken seriously eg 20 years ago, funding wouldn't be an issue now. They've had decades to sort it out but chose not to.

Anyway, I think I posted earlier about what I personally think should happen which is that the world openly acknowledges that Israel has a point with their years of accusations against UNRWA and the UN and that they commit to dealing with it properly once the war is over. Maybe UNRWA could then continue with their humanitarian aid for now on a temporary basis.

How do you know they didn't take them seriously or put in measures to prevent it happening? The account above is from 20 years ago. It has already been mentioned that Israel gets a list of all UNWRA employees annually and there are also internal vetting procedures. Let's wait until the investigation has concluded to determine exactly what has been happening.

Sure. Will we also wait patiently and see what the verdict is with regards to genocide? Or is it ok to jump the gun with these things as long as it is of anti-Israel sentiment?

It's the government, where else do you expect them to be?

DeebeeClapham · 07/02/2024 19:22

So should we defund the NHS because Lucy Letby and Harold Shipman killed some patients?

DeebeeClapham · 07/02/2024 19:30

If Palestines concerns had been taken seriously 75, 50 or 25 years ago we wouldn't be where we are today.

DeebeeClapham · 07/02/2024 19:40

According to Channel 4, the intelligence report "contains no evidence to support Israel's explosive new claim other than stating, 'From intelligence information, documents, and identity cards seized during the course of the fighting, it is now possible to flag around 190 Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist operatives who serve as UNRWA employees.

I came here to post the Norway funding ~ delighted about that.

Dandy.
As per the op...you could argue that the silence is only hypocritical if people weren't so obviously partisan in the first place...if you were charitable.

Muthaofcats · 08/02/2024 12:34

On the topic of the often hypocritical and one sided nature of the discourse on this subject; I thought Alistair Campbell and Rory Stewart articulated the issue well in this week’s Rest is Politics podcast. (He and Rory Stewart were discussing the fact they’d been criticised for not empathising with what happened on 7/10 or the approach of the IDF.) They obviously took the criticism seriously, and noted how painful this conversation is for all and how difficult it is to have a proper conversation about the topic.

They noted how someone working in interfaith dialogue had said the Jewish community is defined by an emotion of fear, and the Muslim community one of anger, and how hard that makes it to bring communities together atm.

Anyway, Alistair Campbell said he has also had criticism calling him a Zionist war criminal from other quarters this week so seemingly not on the ‘right side’ according to either side.

The point they made was the complexities of the issues need to be kept in mind on a topic like this - the difficulty being that each ‘side’ appears to only be willing to listen to opinions in support of their own position and this leads to all the ‘what aboutery’ (which we have seen so much of on this thread and many others…)

The point he made - which I liked and fully agree with - was that it surely should be possible in a mature democracy like ours to feel horror and revulsion for what’s happening in Gaza whilst also keeping in mind the horrors of people affected by the murders and hostage taken of 7/10.

For some reason we seem to have to be absolutely fixated on one side only which is troubling and alarming and polarising.

This articulated much better what I have been trying to get at with this thread. Worth a listen.

EasterIssland · 08/02/2024 21:14

From Icjp page (international centre of justice for Palestinians)

”UNRWA – Call to lawyers to initiate domestic legal proceedings

ICJP will be instructing solicitors in the UK to write to the British government to establish the exact position it is taking following revelations that Israel's controversial 6 page dossier lacked any evidence but still managed to trigger massive defunding of UNRWA. Any unlawful decision will become the subject of judicial review proceedings.

The ICJP considers any State that defunds humanitarian aid agencies following the ICJ’s findings of plausible genocide by Israel in Gaza as an act that could breach its obligations to prevent genocide under the Genocide Convention. Coupled with the supply of financial and military support to Israel this could amount to complicity in genocide under Article 3.

The ICJP calls on lawyers in each of the States that have chosen to defund UNRWA based on a 6 page dossier with no evidence to review the decisions of their governments in domestic courts through judicial review processes.”

Ok, so 21 years ago a report was written about the 1990s. This is not relevant to today. After all Sinn Fein would have been flagged up as current terrorists by your logic of using a part time ambulance driver also driving lorries with IEDs for the PIRA in 1993!

Good example

If Lucy letby and Harold shipman were part of an internationally funded terrorist org whose stated aim was to destroy the UK's neighbours and their citizens.and they were using it's facilities for that..yes, did we mention the teachers brainwashing children for jihad in schools?

As you well know, I was only sharing the old report to show that the UN have been aware for a long, long time that UNRWA hires terrorists. It's been happening for decades. That means they've also had decades to ensure steps are taken to avoid it happening again, yet here we are 20+ years later still dealing with the same shit. I shared the old report to counteract the numerous conspiracy claims of "isn't the timing of the claims suspicious". Because no, the timing isn't suspicious. These claims have been around for decades.

I'm not ok with an aid agency having such close ties with a terrorist organisation, but maybe that's just me. Maybe I'm in the minority for thinking that it completely undermines their mission of helping innocent civilians. I thought there would be more outrage about it but people seem weirdly ok with it 🤷🏻‍♀️
