I had heard references about the divide and rule strategy that resulted in the creation of Hamas but hadn’t really had much detail on it. We have had many history lessons on these posts so adding to the collection.

It is interesting what a major political miscalculation it was and then to be followed by this second political disaster.

Blowback: How Israel Went From Helping Create Hamas to Bombing It

Hamas wants to destroy Israel, right? But as Mehdi Hasan shows in a new video on blowback, Israeli officials admit they helped start the group.

Thanks @notsoready4school for the thread. I hope it will inform many who don't know the facts.

“Divide and Rule”: How Israel Helped Start Hamas to Weaken Palestinian Hopes for Statehood

“This isn’t an effort to try to quell, to destroy Hamas specifically,” says Tareq Baconi, Palestinian analyst and author of Hamas Contained: The Rise and Pacification of Palestinian Resistance. “This is an effort to pursue an ethnic cleansing campaign in the Gaza Strip and beyond the Gaza Strip, as we see the violence rising in the West Bank.” Baconi lays out Israel’s history of enabling Hamas while designating them as terrorists in order to maintain tight control over Gaza. After the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel that killed 1,400, Baconi says, “that equilibrium has now shattered.”

“Divide and Rule”: How Israel Helped Start Hamas to Weaken Palestinian Hopes for Statehood

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres is urging Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, where the death toll from Israel’s two-week bombardment has topped 4,100. Israel says a ground invasion may be imminent. “This isn’t an effort to try to quell...

When Netanyahu won in 2006 he released the original Hamas founder and allowed him to travel to Israel for medical treatment. Makes you think.

Seymour Hersh is a Pulitzer prize winning investigative journalist:

".....The Bibi doctrine—his belief that he could control Hamas—compromised Israeli security and has now begat a bloody war....."

When he returned to office in 2009, the insider said, “Bibi chose to support Hamas” as an alternative to the Palestinian Authority, “and gave them money and established them in Gaza.”
An arrangement was made with Qatar, which began sending hundreds of millions of dollars to the Hamas leadership with Israeli approval. The insider told me that “Bibi was convinced that he would have more control over Hamas with the Qatari money—let them occasionally fire rockets into southern Israel and have access to jobs inside Israel—than he would with the Palestinian Authority. He took that risk.
“What happened this week,” the insider said, “was a result of the Bibi doctrine that you could create a Frankenstein and have control over it.”

is this widely known in Israel do you think? Or just written off as conspiracy theories?

I've read and watched so much over the last month, that I believe that it's a mixture.

Some Israelis will know and support it as a means to an ends (e.g. No 2 state solution, settlements cam be built).

Some geopolitical commentators I watch have actually said that the Israeli media is quite open in things like stating that how the Palestinians are treated is an Apartheid in the media, so the public should be informed (Haeretz is brilliant and has reported on the Bibi Hamas connection)

However the IDF is not above using psychological operations on Israeli citizens to manufacture their support:

The IDF has admitted it engaged in “psychological warfare” during its 2021 military operation in Gaza by using fake social media accounts to try to increase public support for its operations in the Strip.

The IDF’s Spokesperson’s Unit, which serves as the army’s media arm tasked with coordinating domestic and international media campaigns, was found to have opened and operated a range of fake social media accounts in the opening days of the IDF’s Guardian of the Walls operation, according to a expose published Wednesday in the Haaretz newspaper.

The fake accounts were reportedly designed to foster greater positivity among Israelis towards the IDF’s actions in the Gaza Strip in response to a perceived lack of public enthusiasm...."

So if similar techniques to shape opinion are used then many will write it off as a Conspiracy.

You're right. People need to understand the facts. There's so much misinformation and propaganda out there.
