They apparently tell you when you are ovulating, do they work then?

OP posts:
suwoo · 08/02/2010 17:20

Did for me. I love pissing on sticks.

kamsmum · 08/02/2010 17:23

Yes.

sunburntats · 08/02/2010 17:27

are they a pain, do you need to do them every day?
Have you ever pissed on them, and got a - every day?

paddypoopants · 08/02/2010 17:34

Yup they work. Had irregular periods due to PCOS and eventually piss sticks did the trick.( after a long long time). I bought the cheap ones off t'internet in which you peed in the plastic cup ( supplied) and you plonked the stick in. Lots cheaper especially if you're like me and telling when you're ovulating was like taking a shot in the dark. They were cheap enough to keep testing every few days. You can buy the pregnancy tests that work the same way in case you're testing every 5 mins.

Ive been given a huge and VERY lucky batch
did a little wee today and dipped one, it was easy enough, will dip daily i think.

suwoo · 08/02/2010 17:41

I dipped twice daily. Its afternoon wee though- not morning.

Fruitysunshine · 08/02/2010 17:43

I really detest women saying "piss" sticks. Sounds awful.

sunburntats · 08/02/2010 17:43

oooh why?? is your piss different in the afternoon than in the morning?

OP posts:
sunburntats · 08/02/2010 17:44

stronger concentrate of the ovulation hormone thingymabob.

sunburntats · 08/02/2010 18:16

in the morning...or afternoon?

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 08/02/2010 18:20

I don't think they're 100% reliable in isolation as they detect the hormone surge before ovulation but can't tell you whether or not an egg was actually released. But in tandem with charting/temping/observing signs I think they're supposed to be quite helpful in charting the right time iyswim.

tartyhighheels · 08/02/2010 18:24

They worked for me - one 14 month old and another in the oven both produced in record time considering i am an old lady with a wierdy cycle ..... loving the sticks

ooh hot baby sex, lucky you....

suwoo · 08/02/2010 19:37

They worked for me too and three friends. Afternoon wee is better for the ov sticks due to higher concentrate then.

rainbowdays · 08/02/2010 21:51

They did not work for me! I found them more stress than help. With temping and all the other ovulation indicators, the OPK sticks were useless.

I did get positive results, but only if I used the tests at least twice a day so as not to miss the surge, and unfortunately for me the positives came up AFTER ovulation. Yep I would get a temp rise and EWCM and ov pains way before the opk turned positive and at least a day after my temps showed ovulation had already occurred...... useless.

I know they work for some people, but do not get too hung up about them, use them more for interesting fun than worrying about them, or the stress will not help the aim of the game!

sunburntats · 09/02/2010 19:02

Ive been doing them twice a day, morning and afternoon.
They have made me strangely relax.
I think its giving me my fix of dipping sticks and pink lines.
Normally i am obsessed with pregnancy tests, this way i get to do sticks twice a day.
It makes me feel in control, the whole thing is always so random and i end up hoping each month and unsure.
Im going to keep a check of cm as well, and see if the two tie in.
I have never taken so much notice of the signs of ovulation.
Need to know i am knocking on 40

Lots of good points there sunburnt. I found them excellent for a control freak and it does alleviate those obsessive pg test tendancies.

Go for your life!

hairytriangle · 12/02/2010 09:08

I've been using them for a couple of months as I'm over forty and just wanted to see if I ovulate or not. Apparently there's a very short window in which your LH surge can be detected - and today - for the first time - I detected a positive

rosieposey · 12/02/2010 09:14

Hairy triangle am glad to see that you have been using them for a couple of months and got a positive as i have used them for the first time this month and still nothing (im on day 15 in a 28 day cycle) I have been using them twice a day too so fingers crossed if no ovulation this month then next

hairytriangle · 12/02/2010 09:26

rosieposie - dont' panic. Apparently, so I'm told, there is only a short period of time when they will actually detect - I think this is my third month trying, and finally I have positive.

I actually find tuning into what my body is doing quite useful - I get very sore nipples around this time as well as a couple of spots usually - but it is nice to have the pee stick detect it for sure!

Keep going and don't get disheartened just because it doesn't show positive, it doesn't mean no ovulation is happening, necessarily.

Have you asked the doc for any blood tests?

rosieposey · 12/02/2010 09:37

No i haven't because i have only been doing them this month and i was (wrongly) under the impression that you ovulate every single month so i was wondering where mine was this month and i am never late so assumed it would detect the surge yesterday or the day before.

Am not really panicking anyway because i had my DS a year ago, had a miscarriage before him and have 3 teen DD's so i know its possible for me to get pg i think it might just take a while as i am 38 now and even those two years since i was pg with DS probably make a difference in your fertility.

Ive been doing them a couple of times a day so unless it was a very very short surge im pretty sure i havent this month. How many days do you usually test for? (Im running out of stick )
