Ok, it's not the end of the world but I feel a bit crap. Talk me through what just happened...

Dh and I are TTC DC2.

We had sex pretty much every viable day on pretty much any calculation - by which I mean a lot - last month.

When my period was one day late, I did a test which was positive. Not a completely dark line but definitely there.

The next day I did another test to confirm it and it was negative.

I had a lot of the same symptoms as when I conceived DD, which disappeared yesterday.

Yesterday was 10 days late and I had a blood test. It was negative, so I'm definitely not pregnant. No AF either.

Why did that first test come back positive? I thought false positives were very rare? OR impossible.

Could it have been a 'chemical pregnancy'? I think I had one of those the month before I concieved DD. I was five days late and then had a very short, sudden period. And could it work like a charm again next month? [hurt and hopeful emoticon].

I know it's not a really big deal, but I'm feeling a bit down and would like to knwo what happened. Any ideas?

could it be that you were pregnant, but you've lost it? so you might start bleeding sometime soon?

could the blood test be wrong? or are they very reliable?

I thik blood tests are supposed to be very reliable.

I think that's probably what did happen but I have no clue really. I just wish AF would arrive now.

Sounds like a 'chemical pregnancy' or 'missed pregnancy' to me (where the egg is fertilised but implantation is not successful.) There can be enough pregnancy hormone produced to give a positive pregnancy test but if implantation is not successful the hormone will rapidly reduce and disappear and will then no longer give a positive test.

Often your period will come a few days late after this.

Definitely sounds like a chemical pregancy.
My doctor said these happen more often than people realise. Sometimes they produce enough hormones to give you a BFP whereas other times they don't and you just go on to have a normal period without ever realising tthat fertilisation had occurred.

Your period should be arriving in a few days.

Anyone know if the next cycle would be normalish? I just ask because I conceived DD after last chemical pregnancy and I swear we only had sex of rthe first ten days of the month (which would be a bit wierd, no?)

Chemical pregnancies estimated to happen in as many as 50% of cycles of ttc couples. AF may take a couple of days to appear.

Next cycle should be normalish yes but it's not abnormal if it isn't.

Bear in mind that you can ovulate at any point (I ovulate on day 12 for example) and sperm can live up to 5 days in the right conditions so getting pg from having sex in the first days is possible, nay, common! I could have sex on day 7 and conceive on day 12!

I'm now 11 days late, which didn't happen last time. I think it was 5 days that time.

Would this make you think anything different?
