I am ttc, first month this month. Not sure if Ive hit the right dates sex-wise, not sure of cycle length, dont seem to have any EWCM, and thats all I know.

So can some expert please come and tell me:

Whats this about temperature?
Whats a luteal phase
Whats CD?
And anything else Ive missed?
And if anyone can tell me what my dates might have been, or when I might be due AF?

Despite having 2 dc's I have never actuualy ttc before so its all new to me TIA

  1. Your Temp peaks when you ovulate.
  2. luteal phase - hmm not sure I remember!
  3. CD - Cycle Days?
  4. Have sex at least every 2 days all month.

You will have a BFP anytime BFP = BIG FAT POSITIVE

Thandeka · 31/12/2008 22:52

luteal phase is time between ovulation and next period. Usually 12-16 days (average 14 days) usually pretty constant dependendent on the woman (so mine is 12 days). Short LP's less than 10 days can cause a problem with TTC as may not be enough time to implant.

I've just recommended this book to somebody on another thread.

It explains the lot in a very easy to read way.

Thandeka · 31/12/2008 22:55

i second that recomendation- and I did repro physiology at uni- have used NFP for years (to not get pregnant mainly!) and I teach reproduction at secondary school, have countless books on it- and TCOYF STILL managed to teach me stuff I didnt know!

Best book out of all of mine by far- wish I had discovered it sooner! The pictures of EWCM helped enormously - and the pics of cervixes (plural?) before I had been working on descriptions and it is true a picture says a thousand words!

mosschops30 · 31/12/2008 23:02

Oh god so much I dont know. Am clueless about all this!

So can anyone tell me what my chances are:

Had my first AF after mirena taken out on 7th November
Next AF was 8th December
Sex on 22/23/25/29 Dec
AF due about 5th Jan I think

No one can really tell you your chances because it depends on when you ovulate. You had sex on day 14,15, 17 and 21 of your cycle (i think).

Avergae ovulation is day 14- but my average is day 19. Maximum chance of conception is intercourse the three days before and including ovulation.

Issue is egg dies between 6-24 hours post ovulation. So if you ovulate later in a cycle- you may be in with a reasonable chance- if you ovulated on day 14 or earlier you may not be in with less of a chance-

best thing is to chart your cycles for a few months to get an idea of when to best time intercourse for conception. Fertilityfriend is a great website for this (and helps you work it out) but it can get confusing and obsessive so bewarned!

mosschops30 · 31/12/2008 23:17

I dont have a few months, we have left it long enough, have an 8 year gap between dd and ds and dont want a big one between these. I would like to be pg this month or next (not being very demanding am I .

So how do I find when my average day for ovulation is, would I have to take my temp or buy an ovulation kit?
If my cycle is 30 days would that mean I ovulate later or doesnt it make any difference how long the cycle is?

Sorry for all the questions and thank you for all your help
Will look at website now, like to have something to obsess over

Have learned from many experts on this site that most women will ovulate approx 14 days before start of next period apparently.
So if 34 day cycle - ov occurs approx day 20
if 30 day cycle - ov approx day 16 etc etc. Luteal phase is usually pretty constant.

Best thing to do according to all I've read is to count backwards from when next cycle is expected rather than work forward from start of last cycle IYSWIM.

If cycles vary then OV predictor kits might be useful.

Good luck!

mosschops30 · 31/12/2008 23:31

God this fertility friend thing is confusing

Mint choc, so working on your advice, given that my last cycle was 30 days and AF would be due on 7th Jan, counting back 16 days from then is 22nd Dec which means I am in with a chance have i got that right?

MintChocAddict · 31/12/2008 23:49

Count back approx 14 days from expected start of next cycle I think (not an expert by any means!) 24th Dec maybe? Def in with a chance
Fingers crossed for you!

"most women will ovulate approx 14 days before start of next period apparently"

Unfortunately this assumption is not correct at all. This is also based on a 28 day cycle which is something only around 12% of all women have. Ovulation is not an exact science and it can occur earlier, later or not at all in ANY given cycle (so it is possible to have periods without ovulating). Its certainly not always 14 days before the start of the next period.

A "normal" cycle is a cycle length of between 21 and 35 days or with less than 4 days of variation from month to month.

You can actually have a rise in temp in the second half of the cycle when an egg has not been shed so charting as a method is not infallible.

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 01/01/2009 10:07

You know what Mosschops30?

Just forget all this technical jargon, and go for sex every 2-3 days from finishing your period to starting it again, as unless you have had problems in the past, I see no reason to get yourself all worked up and technical about it, it is very stressful to come at it from this angle, just relax and go with the flow.

Hope this doesn't come across as patronising, I have been TTC for 3 yrs and really wish I'd not gotten into it so much at first as there truly was no need ( until a problem was found)

Wishing you luck and a happy new year :D

MintChocAddict · 01/01/2009 12:03

ooops mosschops 30. Sorry to mislead you. I've read that info on here many times but obviously not right. Sorry!

Back to the drawing board for me too I guess.

mosschops30 · 01/01/2009 12:42

thank you othermarypoppins. I really dont know why Im getting into all this either, I guess because ive never actually 'tried' before Im getting all worked up about it not happening.

Think I am going to buy a test tomorrow as I cant wait until Monday then if its negative I will be prepared and if its pos then happy days

thank you for all your help and advice
