Does anyone know how to conceive twins naturally - ie, without fertility treatment or because it runs in the family????

it just happens.

sparklymieow · 13/02/2005 22:33

Normally you can only non-idential twins if the mother releases two eggs in a cycle (that can be genitic) and idential twins normally just happen

no, twins happen either when an embryo splits into two for some unknown reason, or because each ovary releases an egg, and they both get fertilised at the same time.
as far as i am aware, there is no natural way to make this haappen. fertility drugs make the later scenario happen.
i thought it did run in families, and since my mom has twin brothers, i was afraid it would increase my risk of having twins, but apparently that isn the case.

Twiglett · 13/02/2005 22:49

I have twins and much as I love and adore them, why would you want twins, or are you thinking that you are pregnant with them already?

givenupforlent · 13/02/2005 23:40

i am a twin and my parents often asked "WHy?"

There is an African tribe where there is a high incidence of twins. Thought to be because of a locally grown yam type thing that is naturally high in estrogen.

I would also love twins as been told will only have one full term pregnancy! Is that similar to your situation?

Sorry I am really nosey

Kelly1978 · 14/02/2005 15:25

I'm pregnant with twins and I can't say I would recommend it to anyone My last two single pregnancies were a breeze compared to this.

NotQuiteCockney · 14/02/2005 15:41

How can they tell you'll only have one full-term pregnancy?

lilsmum · 14/02/2005 16:11

just out of interest, is it true that twins "skip" a generation? i.e my great grandmother was a twin and my auntie had a miscarriage with twins iykwim!! so would it skip me and hit my kids?

what twins are in your or your dp/dh's families?

Kelly1978 · 14/02/2005 16:15

I don't know about skipping generations, there are no twins in either of mine or my partner's families.

lilsmum · 14/02/2005 16:16

just shows you learn something new everyday!! lol i always thought it was a hereditry thing

I wonder if my daughter will have twins? I'm pg with twins and her dad is a twin (my exp). Both his parents were twins too.

Dyzzidi · 15/02/2005 10:03

I have got so many Gynae problems they want to do a hystorectomy ( sorry bad speller) as I am in and out of hospital and have nbeen for 10 years.

There is a slight chance a pregnancy will ease some of my symptoms but it is highly unlikely. I am waiting for IVF at the moment so fingers crossed!

If i am lucky enough to have a child after all these years of problems i will be satisfied with that!

I heard that you are more likely to conceive twins if you concieve straight after coming off the pill. I tried that but didn't manage any twins.
you also have a higher chance of concieving twins if you're older, say over about 35.
and if you're Nigerian.

so there you are - wait til you are nearly 40, come off the pill and that month shag a Nigerian with lots of twins in his family

Dyzzidi · 15/02/2005 10:16

lol do you think i should suggest this to my partner!!!!!

Fennel · 15/02/2005 10:21

maybe only if he is already nigerian?
