I have been on the depo injection for 6 months and it ran out nearly 3 weeks ago. I got the injection cos i had 2 m/c in 6 months and wanted to give body a rest.

I have read that it can take up to 2 years to get pg! and up to 6 months for periods to return!!!

anyone had any experiences? I feel pg sore boobs sickness and tiredness and needing the toilet every 2 mins but surely I cant be cos i havent had a period yet??????

Just wanted to add that on the plus side I had 9 years of no periods and got over a fear of needles

When I started on it the drug had only been available for a few years and they recommended an oestrogen level check after 2 years. At 2 years I went back and reminded them and was told they had completed the study and that the tests were not needed. Apparently in 5 years or so all the tests were OK. I never thought about the fact that they had mentioned it was a study. Only later I found out it was still being trialed really.

It has put me off all contraception so DP wears "Wellies" as he calls them It is nice to not have chemicals in me for once!

I was on the injection for a few years - was due an injection in Sept but didn't have it - periods took 10 months after the injection was out of my system to return.

When they did, I could not believe how sore my boobs were during the first cycle !

I had depo for about 2 years after being on the pill for about 7 years as it seemed like much less hassle (and to be fair, for me, it was, no periods, no weight gain, no tablets) and I had my last one sept 2004. So technically TTC'ing from Dec 2004. Got my first period back Oct 2005 (just as was starting to get worried and after about 6 BFN's when I was convinced I was PG!!) and conceived dec 2005 (ectopic pregnancy). Had to wait three months after the EP before I could TTC again and so I started trying again in march 2006 and conceived again May 2006 with ds.

Apparantly in France, they only use this contraception for women who don't want to have any children in the near future if at all as it is so difficult to determine when fertility returns. I had another jab after having ds (in an "omg I never want to have another baby ever as I am so sleep deprived state"!!) and my GP actually gave me much more info on its effects than before but I still went ahead. However, my head had cleared by the time it came for the next one and I chose to go back on the pill instead!!

So, took 10 months for periods to return after jab "runs out" and then a further 2 cycles to conceive with EP.

My SIL conceived within 9 months of her last jab, periods had returned after 4m.

Hi everyone. I just wanted to add my tuppence worth. I am concerned that there is a lot of scaremongering about dp - a lot of anecdotal stories which spread on the web and scare people ttc witless. Please, if you are really concerned, use the web to find primary data on your particular area of concern.

Like any contraceptive, dp has its pros and cons. It will not be suitable for everyone and some people may be unlucky enough to be prescribed it when it is not appropriate. I can tell you that the black box warning against long term use relates to bone density issues, not fertility issues.

On the patient information leaflet, there is information regarding the return to fertility:

"DEPO-PROVERA CI has a prolonged contraceptive effect. In a large US study of
women who discontinued use of DEPO-PROVERA CI to become pregnant, data are
available for 61% of them. Based on Life-Table analysis of these data, it is expected that
68% of women who do become pregnant may conceive within 12 months, 83% may
conceive within 15 months, and 93% may conceive within 18 months from the last
injection. The median time to conception for those who do conceive is 10 months"

There is a delay in return to fertility, which should be explained to you before you are prescribed the drug (but may not be).

Please can I urge you to read the patient information for any drug that you take. If you are administered the drug by your doctor, ask to see the leaflet. You know your concerns and medical history better than anyone.

GordonTheGopher · 27/08/2008 06:50

Depo is EVIL EVIL EVIL.

I am still ttc 2 years after last injection. I also had a MMC a few months ago which didn't even develop - I blame the depo.

What shocks me most is that they are giving it to teenage girls who may develop infertility and / or osteoporosis.

If I had the energy I would start a world-wide campaign to get it made illegal.

It's making me depressed, has completely screwed up my body and has so far denied my ds a brother or sister.

GordonTheGopher · 27/08/2008 06:51

PS you're not pg, it's just the depo leaving your system making you feel crap. I felt really shite for a couple of months before periods came back.

Jampot83 · 20/09/2014 21:32

I had the injection twice. Last time was May 2013. My periods returned after 6 months. They are completely unpredictable and sometime I have two a month. 16 months since my last injection. Recently my periods have stopped. I feel bloated tired and disgusting. Negative pregnancy tests. I'm hoping I'm almost clear now! I just want my body back.

Paraibalove · 21/09/2014 09:34

I got pregnant first month after finishing the depo, after being on it a few years.

fast forward to ttc2. . 15 months later still not pregnant. on my 3rd cycle now, so took almost year to get anything. And they're not even remotely regular. its shit.
