Periods after coming off of the pill

I am after advice for a friend of mine who is trying to get pregnant. She took her last pill on the 27th April, and had a normal period on the 1st May, she then had another period 28 days later on the 29th May, since then nothing, she has done numerous pregnancy test but all negative, so Was just wondering is this fairly normal after coming off of the pill, would she still be ovulating between periods?

Any advice would be brilliant - I can't help as I have never taken the pill

I was on the pill for eight years and came off at the end of Feb. First cycle was somewhere around 67 days. I noticed when I had ovulated because my discharge or cervical mucus was egg white consistency. After the period, next cycle was 27 days, and third cycle 31 days, so things seem to have got back into the monthly pattern now.

If your friends first real period [not withdrawal bleed] was 28 days after withdrawal bleed, sounds like she had a very regular cycle straight away, but on the whole it can take the body a while to readjust to the different hormone levels.

Thanks strange as she had a normal cycle a month after stopping the pill but since then nothing,and think she is just concerned if this is normal or not.x

I would suggest she visits the GP and has a blood test done.

No its not normal. The pill leaves your system very quickly after taking the last tablet.

If periods become irregular hormonal imbalances are often to blame. Your friend could have a blood test done around day 3 (she needs to go on the 3rd of the month as her periods have now stopped) to check her LH and FSH levels. These two hormones are key to the whole ovulation process; if these are awry then ovulation will be affected.

There is no real evidence to suggest that the pill is responsible for failure to ovulate but it can mask symptoms of any underlying hormonal imbalance (which the pill also did not cause).

No periods - no ovulation. Also it is quite possible to have periods without actually ovulating.

Lynsy - your friend may find that the GP is unwilling to investigate her for 3-6 months after coming off the Pill - they like to make sure your system has had time to settle down before sending you for tests...

I came off the pill in May after being on it for over 10 yrs, and have since had two "periods" - they've come exactly every 28 days but have been very pill-like. Bleeding a bit on first day & then virtually nothing, over in three days. We're using condoms at the mo, thought we would for a couple of cycles, but have no idea whether these are proper periods or not. Am tempted just to stop using anything & see what happens... but may try 1 more month.
