Is it the coil with the hormones- I believe that this can stop your period HTH

LIZS · 03/02/2005 13:40

Are you b' feeding - I went from having one at 5/6 weeks and 8 weeks after ds to not having another until he was 5 months. Is it a normal coil or mirena ?

biglips · 03/02/2005 13:42

Mirena is soft but contains a low level of hormone.

biglips · 03/02/2005 13:50

cant remember as i know they said they cannot a normal one cos ive had a c-section (i had coil fitted in when baba was 8 weeks old) so they used the soft one (i was half asleep when i went in)

So you're certain you've got a standard coil not a mirena?

biglips · 03/02/2005 19:17

the coil i had was 2 straight sticks with no T shape end..

Did you see it before it went in then ? A mirena looks pretty straight but is tweaked by string when inserted to open the end.

biglips · 03/02/2005 21:27

yes the midwife shows it to me and its was a plastic 2 straight sticks, and the midwife said "once its inserted, the end will curl to hold it in place"

Can't help you re: coil as I don't have one but as you are using condoms as well, pregnancy is very unlikely.

coppertop · 03/02/2005 22:54

I don't know anything about coils but my periods after ds2 followed the same pattern as yours. I had 2 heavy ones and then the 3rd one was very late (about 2 weeks I think). I remember it so well because we were panicking about me being pregnant again so soon.

bubble99 · 03/02/2005 23:31

All coils have a three to (usually) five month 'settling in' period (no pun intended . Most coils need to be changed five yearly and you will notice that at the end of the five years your periods will become heavier, as they were when the coil was inserted. You are still in the initial 'settling in' time with your coil and that will probably explain why your period is late. If you are also using condoms effectively in addition to the coil then it is highly unlikely you are pregnant. There is a very small chance when using coils that a pregnancy can implant in an area of the uterus sufficiently far away enough from the coil so as to be unaffected. If your period does not show up within the next week I would suggest you make an appt with your GP to exclude pregnancy.
