Trying for a third at 46: time to stop or carry on?

Age 46. Been trying a couple years for a 3rd. Other both conceived within 6 months age 7 and 9. I appreciate im older. Still regular periods. Spells in 2 years where trying hasnt actually happened. Just give up? I read one minute women have babies in mid 40s all the time other articles say miracle of science.

I wanted four and was over 40 when I had my third. I made a decision though that if I hadn't fallen pregnant again by 45 I would call it a day. The idea of approaching retirement age and having a teenager was not filling me with joy. Turns out three was our number and we're happy with that. Just survived GCSE years and very happy that our years of full on parenting are coming to a close and looking forward to some hard earned fun.

The risk of problems both with any pregnancy and baby/child are obviously higher now you’re older. I would enjoy the family you already have rather than hanker after a dream.
Also you’re gonna be knackered as an older Mum with a primary aged child and a couple of teenagers!

TinyPea123 · 25/08/2026 12:55

I am 40 and on 3rd cycle of trying
If anything I have more energy now than in my 30's. I jave 4 older children and a previous stillborn . Im more stable financially, more mature and in better shape than ever.

Go for it. If you dont you may regret it ❤️

You're very unlikely to become pregnant at your age, and if you do, the miscarriage rate is high.

Do you really want to be claiming a pension while your child is at school?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 25/08/2026 12:59

I wouldn't.Id quit while you're ahead.Im 46 too and I think its far far too old unless its a much longed for first child.

MurielTheTerrible · 25/08/2026 13:00

Stop now. If you got pregnant in the next few months, you'd be 47 by the time you had the baby. You'd be looking to retire while still financing a child through uni. There's not a chance I'd cope with my menopausal misery while wrangling a toddler. And your other 2 are much older, it would totally change the dynamic of your family. I think it's a terrible idea.

MummyOre · 25/08/2026 13:00

Just because your having periods, doesn't mean your ovulating. It's how i realised I was in premature menopause at 41.

Realistically at 46, I wouldn't expect to carry a successful pregnancy.

Difficult but the reality is we can't always beat mother nature.

Sakura7 · 25/08/2026 13:01

Aside from the fact that conceiving and carrying a healthy pregnancy to term is unlikely at this age, it's a bad idea anyway. Be happy with the two you've got.

birdinatree1903 · 25/08/2026 13:02

It’s obviously your decision but there’s zero chance I’d even entertain the idea of trying for a third at 46!

emuloc · 25/08/2026 13:07

I would not even entertain the idea. You will be able to do more, for the two that you already have.

FrankieNeverRelax · 25/08/2026 13:24

I wouldn’t dream of doing this but if it’s what you really want then you need to set a deadline of when to stop eg stop trying in6 months but really try like ovulation tests etc if you are serious about it

Loloblue · 25/08/2026 13:42

Have you considered IVF it will really be your best chance most likely...?

Keroppi · 25/08/2026 13:43

I personally wouldn't want to.
