Would announcing a pregnancy at seven or eight weeks be too early?

I want to tell my closest people right after my 6 week scan at 7-8 weeks. It will be my big 30th birthday event so everyone will be there.

These are parents, siblings, from both sides, and closest friends and as an extension all their partners.

I also want them to feel excited. My sister announced at 6 weeks but none of us were allowed to get our hopes up just in case. I want people to be excited. It will be the first baby on DH side so I know his parents will be dramatic and excited.

would it be a buzz kill to announce at 7/8 weeks? If I waited longer I would have to tell most people over the phone as the next in person would be Christmas

I would be wary of doing a big announcement OP. I just think it'll make it really hard if you did have a miscarriage.

Fine to tell people but maybe try and do it in smaller groups /more low key?

It's awful telling people when it's bad news

I would wait, mainly because I'd worry you won't get the reaction you might hope for. Lots of people will have had early losses and feel nervous about celebrating with you/getting too excited for you at that stage and it will influence how they respond.

It is so personal OP, you do what you think is best.

I don't put much weight on 12 weeks as viability very sadly doesn't mean that you will end up with a baby. 12 weeks really isn't magic threshold.

I also felt worse between 4-14 weeks than I did in the last trimester and could have done with support then rather than at the end.

Congratulations on your happy news Flowers

I waited until 12 weeks then miscarried at 16 weeks. I honestly wished I hadn't told people because I hated the seeing pity in their eyes. Also I was 42 so knew it was unlikely is conceive again.

Sorry for your loss 💐
Such a difficult thing to tell people.

I don't understand why miscarriages are kept a secret from close family or friends.
Tell the people you love. Would you want their support if it didn't end well?
I have 3 kids and 4 miscarriages. I told my closest straight away every time and didn't regret it.

There’s no right or wrong! I didn’t tell anyone except work until after viability. I actually didn’t tell anyone friends until he was born (I didn’t really show)

AgnesMcDoo · 24/08/2026 17:38

It’s entirely up to you. I had 2 mcs though and appreciated the privacy of no one knowing.

Tell when you feel like telling.
I'm a very private person and told my parents and closest family at the beginning of the 3rd trimester :) my friends after the birth. Is it weird? I do not care. It was right for me.
I've had infertility and plenty of 1st trimester losses. I didn't need anyone besides my husband to work through the grief and pain.
My mum told me my pregnancy lasted ages hahaha. She knew about it for 3 months.

I've had people tell me at 5 weeks and I was very happy for them!

cupfinalchaos · 26/08/2026 16:00

Personally if I miscarried I wouldn’t have any issues discussing it were the worst were to happen.

I think it's when people had the viability scan.

In these modern times many women have earlier scans that are much more accurate than they used to be. I was told at 8 weeks by my ivf clinic that everything looked good and they were pretty confident based on that I'd have a healthy baby. In fact I just googled it and the stats are:
Weeks 5 to 6: Risk is around 9% to 20% overall, but drops notably once a heartbeat is visualized.
Week 6: ~9.4%
Week 7: ~4.2%
Week 8: ~1.5% to 2%
Week 9: ~0.5%
Week 10 to 13: Drops below 1% to 2%
After Week 14: Falls to 1% or less

So by 8 weeks the risk is already pretty low and barely higher than the risk through the rest of pregnancy.

The convention was always 12 weeks because that used to be the point women first saw a scan.
