Positive pregnancy tests coming and going after MMC

Trigger warning: miscarriage

Six weeks ago I had a D&C for a MMC which was detected at my 12 week scan, having stopped growing at 8 weeks. They scanned me for retained products during the procedure and were happy everything was gone.

My pregnancy tests took awhile to fade until a week ago at five weeks after, when I got a clear one. I haven’t tested since, because I assumed it was all done.

I have been tracking my lh for the past two weeks as I want to be able to figure out where I am in my cycle. I bled for five weeks so wanted to have some idea when my period would return. All readings have been low and below 0.4, with yesterday’s being 0.1. Today’s was 1.1 which is higher than I’ve ever had, when TTC previously.

I was so puzzled by the sharp increase that I got to thinking that sometimes you can get a spike on ovulation tests when pregnant. I took a Premom pregnancy test and there was a faint but definite line. I took a Tesco plastic test and it was super negative.

I know the answer to what is going on is time and retesting, but has this happened to anyone? Is it possible that the tests never stopped being positive and I’ve deluded myself?

Im so sorry for what you have been through ❤️

I had a scan after passing MMC naturally and was told there was no significant amount of tissue left - however 7 weeks later I was still getting a vvfl on premom tests.

I had prolonged bleeding after my first period but the hospital said their tests were negative (my premom ones still had the faint line! I felt like I was going mad) in the end I was started on a combination of doxycycline and metronidazole antibiotics for an infection (same treatment as they give for retained products) - second day on them passed a large piece of tissue and low and behold my tests were totally negative after that.

I would say if you feel like something is not right go back to EPAU/gynaecology. Has your bleeding all stopped? Xx

Thank you so much. I’m so sorry that you’ve experienced a loss too and that it was prolonged. It’s hard enough to recover as it is.

I haven’t been back as the lines had got so faint I had thought they were blank at first- definite squinters. Then when the test was definitely blank I assumed it was over. Today’s was much darker than it was a week ago.

I think my body is just so confused. It was my second loss in a row so it feels like I’ve been pregnant since September solidly. That’s definitely enough to confuse a body 😆

I would say if your test is darker and there’s no chance of a new pregnancy get in touch with your local unit - they will likely do another scan or give some medication

best of luck hope it doesn’t go on much longer for you ❤️❤️❤️

Happened to me in December 5 weeks after my d&c I had a chemical pregnancy. You may have ovulated whilst bleeding, the body can be quick to recover and get back on track. Don’t dismiss it, keep testing. My tests didn’t get any darker over 4/5 days and then I had a period. Check and if nothing changes in a few days call you EPU

Thank you both. There is a chance of pregnancy but I don’t think I believe it after the few months we’ve had. Also just feel that it’s more likely to be residual if the second test was negative. I had a chemical with pre mom pregnancy tests and after reading a few reviews I’m not sure if ever was a chemical or false positives, which I think is adding to the uncertainty now.

You may be pregnant but keep monitoring it as there are some rare complications that produce continuing pregnancy hormones (e.g., partial molar pregnancy), which would need treatment if you have it. Unlikely but keep an eye!

It’s negative again today. Feel such a fool for harbouring a glimmer of hope it was a new pregnancy. Flipping hormones. I would like this miscarriage to be over now please.
