Is spotting for 6 days before period every month normal?

Every month I start cramping and spotting / getting brown or pink discharge at about 9dpo. This lasts until my period about a week later. I’m ttc so finding it extremely deflating as I can usually tell about 9dpo if I’m not pregnant.

The only time this spotting hasn’t happened is when I’ve conceived my other two children. Just wondering if other people have had this? I’m only on month 3 of ttc this baby but at 9dpo already no it’s not happened this month based on previous patterns 😓. It took me 6 months to conceive both of my other babies.

I had this and it was a combination of cervical erosion and adenomyosis

Elleohbee · 22/08/2025 08:10

@whereisit1 thanks so much for the quick reply , really sorry to hear that. Are you ok? And has it meant conceiving is more difficult?

Just wondering if I should message the GP as it’s now very much a recurring pattern and a week in a half to two weeks of spotting / bleeding each week is soul destroying 😂. Feeling so emotional about it this morning as I genuinely thought this was the month then it all started again.

Hi, yes I'm fine thank you. The cervical erosion cleared up itself before I started TTC. I developed adenomyosis later, but there may have been an element of that earlier stuff too. Definitely worth seeing a GP. They gave me a mirena which has completely cured the bleeding , but obviously not an option for you.
Honestly yes I did have some trouble getting pregnant - well no trouble getting pregnant but we had some early losses. We never got any investigations or anything. Now have DC.
All the best.

It could be a sign of low progesterone I’ve heard, I get spotting at 9 dpo and my period comes a day later so having hormones checks today but I think they says a progesterone test at 9dpo is best to check prog levels during luteal phase. I’ve not had this before either and had 13/14 day luteal before my first 4 years ago. Now onto cucle 2 of TTc. I have managed to lengthen it from 9 days to 10 this past cycle with Inositol, P5P (Vit B6) Vit C and Vitex, and that was only after taking it 1 month. Now 2 months in so hoping this cycle is even longer. I’m also doing seed cycling. Good luck may be worth trying any of these supplements if not taking already xx

Thanks so much for the advice! All the best with ttc @ajc1994 ❤️.

I spoke to the GP and they have suggested a smear test and then maybe a cd21 blood test but they don’t think there’s much they can do 😓

I had this. I was spotting before trying for DD2 not every month but some. I have cervical ectroption though and I believe that causes the bleeding.

It took me 3 months to conceive DD2 and 36. Same time as DD1 when I wasn't spotting.

She's 21 months now and I still get it now again again but definitely less. Smears are clear but one the last one she said she could still see the ectroption.

I was due a 21 day blood test but I got pregnant the month it was booked. Good luck

I had this for around 5/6 days before my period each month. I’m unsure of the cause but the nurse did tell me I have cervical erosion at my last smear.

Just wanted to share that I managed to get pregnant on my second cycle of trying. I had the typical brown bleeding for a few days, then it stopped and I realised my period was late. So I’m not sure it’s necessarily an indicator that something is wrong.

Wishing you luck in TTC!

@Elleohbee ask your GP for an ultrasound referral to check for fibroids.

Elleohbee · 25/08/2025 11:53

@sirensong thanks so much , I think this is the route it needs to go down. Day 5 of spotting now (13dpo) and period hasn’t shown. It’s getting lighter brown now and cramps have gone. Doctor advised making sure my smear test is upto date which it is. She also said ‘maybe it’s just your normal’, but my question is whether my normal is medically normal. Just hoping it doesn’t interfere with ttc!

Sounds like maybe low progesterone which could be caused by various things. Mines a bit low and I had progesterone blood test plus ultrasound and it looks like my ovulation isn’t strong enough/eggs not maturing enough before ovulation which in turn leads to low progesterone, so I’m starting letrozole.

don’t lose hope yet - 3 months is totally normal, we’ve only got like 20-30% chance a cycle even if everything is fine I think, so doesn’t mean it won’t happen xx

Kbaby21 · 18/01/2026 19:52

@Elleohbee hello I have this too and ttc just wondering how you got on in the end?
thanks.

Moonyblue · 18/01/2026 22:36

Hello @Kbaby21

I had spotting too I finally got my bfp last week after 8 cycles of trying to conceive.

I didn’t have this spotting with every cycle but I noticed it happened after I started taking pregnacare in the later cycles. I had an ultrasound, smear test and vaginal ultrasound because I told my gp this was not usual for me. All the tests results came back clear and they advised it could just be hormonal.

I decided to stop taking any supplements that helped conception just to allow my body to be in its natural state again and straight after the next cycle I was back to no spotting just my 5 days period. Then the cycle after that I must have conceived. I think the supplements in my case messed with my cycles as it also shortened my cycles too which went back to 29/30 days when I stopped taking anything.

I started getting this in my early 40s and was told it was a sign of less progesterone.
