TTC after stopping combined pill - first cycle trying

Hi all,

just looking for advice and support as I start my TTC journey. I’m 31 and have been on the combined pill (microgynon) for over a decade. I went onto the pill mostly for managing severe period pains (this was successful and also made my slightly irregular periods much more predictable).

My husband and I are keen to TTC so I finished my last pill packet 22/6 and had my withdrawal bleed 25-29/6. Since then I’ve been trying to monitor my CM and look for signs of ovulation but when I think I might be having EWCM the next day it’s creamy again and I’m not convinced I have actually ovulated yet. It’s now been 14 days since the end of my withdrawal bleed and I’m at a bit of a loss as to when to expect my first real period or ovulation as my Flo app predicts I’ve already ovulated (as it thinks my withdrawal bleed is an actual period). I don’t want to get too focused on it and just let things happen (not really keen on doing ovulation tests or BBT unless we aren’t successful after a few months).

Does anyone have an experience of coming off the combined pill and how long it took to regulate your periods and also ovulate? I was kind of hoping we’d be pregnant super quick as I heard you can ovulate the first month off but I’ve also heard that it could take months to ovulate in a cycle? I’m also super nervous about what my periods will be like as I haven’t had a real one since I was 18 and they were extremely painful and somewhat irregular. Has anyone else come off the pill who had similar periods beforehand - and if so did you periods return to what they were like or have they changed over time? As my body cannot be the same as it was when I was a teenager (I hope!).

l’m also struggling with jumping to conclusions at every little symptom - the last couple of days I’ve had quite sore nipples (sorry if TMI) so maybe that means I’ll be ovulating soon? Or could it be early signs of pregnancy? As we have been DTD sporadically since the last day of my withdrawal bleed.

It would be lovely to get to chat to anyone who has been in a similar situation and has advice or if you’re also starting to TTC after coming off the pill so that we can discuss the process and reassure each other! I feel like I have nobody I can talk to about this as hubby obvs has no advice and really wants to take the relaxed approach when it comes to TTC!

Thanks in advance!!

Hi, I took my last pill at the end of March and had a withdrawal bleed a few days after. I had my first period 30 days later and since then they’ve been regular and last around 5 days. My cycles have been between 25-27 days so far. I’ve only just started using the ovulation test strips on my last cycle but we haven’t fell pregnant yet. It’s so strange coming off contraception after being on it for so long (12 years) and feeling all these different symptoms!

Thanks for sharing your journey! That sounds really promising to be so regular so quickly. Thats our plan too - we’ll try just seeing what happens for a few months then probably look at more careful timing with things if nothing happens.

My hormones feel so out of whack! Trying to get familiar with my body know - makes me realise how numb the pill made me!

I came off the pill a couple of years ago & had a period exactly 28 days after, so cycles have been pretty regular since then. I also used to have heavy & painful periods but mine are now really light/short and not overly painful, I thought they might get worse after my hormones regulated but that doesnt seem to be the case

I took the combined pill for 15 years. Took my last pack in August 2023 and my cycle wasn’t regular until early 2024. Even a couple of times since then it’s been a bit haywire. I’ve just recently had some tests done due to ttc since coming off contraception with no luck and everything has come back normal so hopefully our time is soon. Fingers crossed you get your cycle back to normal soon ☺️

@LuckyDuck93 thank you for sharing - I’m hoping mine will be similar then as I’d hate to go back to having those awful period pains!

@heidihigh interesting - I’ve heard some people say it took them up to 6 months for their cycles to regulate again. And I can’t imagine TTC when your periods are all over the place is easy! Sending all the baby dust ✨
