Home insemination spotting for a whole week

I posted this previously but forgot to add a title. I have also since seen that bleeding in the tww is more often associated with a negative test result than not. However, I'm still not clear on what could cause a whole week of spotting - not part of my usual, regular 28 day cycle.

My partner and I have been trying to have a baby. We're a female female couple, I'm 41, we've tried three cycles of iui unsuccessfully. My lh score was something like 13 so they thought it was worth trying. We have one cycle of ivf left to try but also in the meantime tried home insemination using a friend. I wasn't convinced of this working but then got what I thought was an implantation bleed. We've tested maybe slightly early (by a few days) but the test was negative. I've had this spotting for six days now so slightly worried that that might be something bad. I don't think we're pregnant, again. I've never posted on here before but wondering whether anyone has had a similar bleed and just generally looking for any support - this whole process is so hard

My first thought was implantation bleed, but if not...

What did you use for insemination? Could you possibly have an infection?

TheBuffetInspector · 30/03/2025 05:42

I mean obviously you could

I'd think if still testing negative in a few days then infection may be likely. Worth seeing a gp as you don't want to ruin your last IVF cycle.

We used a sterile kit bought specifically for it so I hope not but I will check with dr. Thanks, hadn't actually thought of it

Fingers crossed for a pregnancy very soon. Still might be implantation...

I had an infection once that caused random spotting and bleeding. Not STI lol. GP said these things can just happen, only takes a tiny irritant sometimes.

Keep us updated!

Sorry, I'm a granny now and still want to hear about more babies 🤣

Yeah we were careful to get std checks and everything but I hadn't thought of the procedure itself causing infection. I don't know why. You sound like my mum - both my sisters have toddlers, she is ready for a new baby! I don't think this will be it sadly but maybe ivf. Thank you for.your response

Hey, we sometimes have to use home kits if I’m ovulating and it’s too much pressure to perform more than once for OH. Also have had ivf x2 without a pregnancy.

weirdly in my last cycle I had spotting quite soon after ovulation (too soon) that lasts up until period and again this month at 2dpo today have been spotting, too early for implantation. It’s annoying as it’s stopping me feel like I’m in with a chance. I also have mild pain. The only other time I’ve had mid cycle bleeds was when I had (what turned out to be) a cervical ectropion (harmless).

do make sure your smear is up to date (though I bet it is if you’ve been doing ivf).

fertility doc agreed with me that it could just be hormones disrupted a bit from ivf. I dunno though, I dont like it. Doesn’t feel right. I do wonder if the home kit is trustworthy in terms of being sterile. I sincerely hope it’s not peri coming v early. But I’ve v low ovarian reserve so it’s not impossible. Sorry I just let all the thoughts tumble out that have been going around my head since bleeding again. I’ll let you know if I find out anything for sure. About to start ivf again once some bloods come back.

Better out than in! It's such a hard process emotionally. I think it helps to talk. I read that implantation bleeding is kind of not really a thing. That any bleeds people get are usually hormonal disruption. I was wondering because the blastocyst - if it existed - in week 2 would be miniscule, so how would that disrupt enough womb lining to bleed? I also read that bleeding in the first couple of weeks is actually more often correlated to a negative test than not (though not always) and anything like actual implantation bleeding or bleeding caused by the embryo would be a few weeks in. As far as I understood it anyway. However, I'm pretty sure that my sister, who had ivf, had spotting from before her test date. She thought a few weeks later that she was miscarrying when she had a shockingly heavy bleed but it was a subchorionic haematoma caused by implantation. When the embryo attaches to the lining it can cause sort of a bruise/collection of blood. She now has a healthy, cheeky toddler running around. So many things can happen. Part of what I find difficult in the tww is all the things that could be signs of pregnancy but could also be your normal cycle. A lot of googling happens for me! I hope you do get a positive test result. Let us know how it goes
