Pregnant but didn't test positive until very late?

Has anyone been pregnant but not had a positive test until weeks into the pregnancy?

Curious as to people's experiences...

I'm currently 2 and a half weeks late for my period and I tested the day of my missed period and got a negative, then tested 2 days after this and again negative so didn't think anything of it. Until this past I'd say 8-10 days where I have not been able to stop eating. And i genuinely mean every 15 to 20 minutes I feel the NEED to eat. I'm having full meals like I normally do but then in between this having to have the equivalent to another meal in snacks cos I genuinely don't feel full. Also I'm soooo tired, I get roughly 7-8 hours a night sleep but then before I go to bed I'm falling asleep on the sofa for maybe 2 hours and even then im still yawning all day and pretty much ready for bed by 6pm

PS going to get a test today and do one, so I know that's the only way I will truly find out but just interested in other people's experiences

You would test positive 2.5 weeks after a missed period if you were pregnant.

I am drowning in pregnancy test questions on here as I personally didn’t think it was possible to be pregnant this month due to not TTC, had a period which was on the lighter side but not far off normal and then had a fertility scan (we are about to start IVF) and the doctor told me my lining was thick to be one day post period and there was what appeared to be a sac on the scan.

Took a test and there is the faintest line that only I can see (husband can’t but couldn’t ever see faint lines on covid tests either), took a test 2 days later and similar outcome. Now I would be about 3 days late if my period was actually implantation bleeding and I think surely the line would be dark at this stage if I was pregnant?

curious to see your outcome! Please keep us updated.

Just to add, my consultant advised me to take another test two days later and then to wait 7 days before taking another as the HCG levels double every 48-72 hrs so may have been too low to show a positive when I first tested. All I ever hear is people having BFP when period is due or period is a bit late, so I don’t imagine I am pregnant if it is still barely visible to the naked eye at this stage. But google seems to suggest take a test 7 days post period for most accurate results. I wonder if you took one day of late period and then two days later that maybe you could be and it will show up now? Have you taken any more since then?

Post missed or late period*

Miraclemuma03 · 20/03/2025 09:42

@Iggilypiggily if the doctor saw a pregnancy sac in the scan then a hpt would be a clear positive as you wouldn't be able to see any type of pregnancy before 5 weeks or hcg has to be quite high to pick up a pregnancy on an ultrasound.

@anon1411 by 2 and a half weeks late, if you were pregnant then you would definitely have a very clear positive hpt by now.

with my first pregnancy I didn’t test positive ever!
ended up having a scan and by the time I had a scan I was quite far along. Things have improved since then though I’m sure. He’s now 27 so a long time ago.

TY78910 · 20/03/2025 09:51

Guess you could have ovulated late and therefore it would have pushed the pregnancy hormones out to be later. Hopefully test will confirm for you x

Iggilypiggily · 20/03/2025 10:05

Thanks everyone - the consultant did say to me have you been trying to conceive because this looks like an early pregnancy scan, which is the only reason I tested. She was aware of my dates and things when she said it and she did say it was in keeping with a 4 week scan (empty sack) as you can sometimes see something that early - but like you say I thought HCG would be high enough by now. She did say that faint line looks like it is an early pregnancy but to wait and if there is still no positive by next week they will do bloods. A week is just such a long time.

@anon1411 please let us know the outcome! I have become invested in so many people on here that have posted today / yesterday about faint lines!

Thank you! Aww I am sure you are over the moon. I’m so chuffed for you!

Puppupandaway · 20/03/2025 14:49

Congratulations!!

Are your cycles always regular? If I had to guess I’d say you ovulated late and are maybe 6 weeks not 8. It would be very unusual not to have a positive when you expect your period. You’ll find out for sure at your 12 week scan.

SpringTulips22 · 20/03/2025 15:24

Hi all,

In 2 abnormal pregnancies, I had negative tests for a long time (even after missed period) and then when i did eventually get positives, the lines were very faint. This made me concerned something was up so saw gyno straight away and indeed the first pregnancy was ectopic (treated with methotrexate) and the second one a suspected ectopic which (thankfully) resolved naturally.

I am just sharing my experience and not to alarm you and I am sure all is normal for you as ectopics are rare (1% of pregnancies). Until this experience I knew very little about ectopics and am now super cautious and push to get scanned early as I am at increased risk having had one.

I've previously had a healthy pregnancy and have a 2YO. In these 2 "abnormal" cases the only indicator things weren't right was late positives, and faint lines (my HCG remained very low in both, but in some ectopics it reaches high levels).

Iggilypiggily · 20/03/2025 15:32

Thanks @SpringTulips22! I guess however that @anon1411 only did two tests on day of missed period and shortly after and then nothing further until today, so it wasn’t a lot of negatives it was just that there hadn’t been any tests from then until now and you just had a hunch, is that right @anon1411?

My consultant did say it is possible to not get a positive until 7 days post period due so not particularly late, but I highly suspect I’m not pregnant. My sack was seen in the right location though so I’m not worried re ectopic - just fed up of waiting! I won’t be convinced I’m not until negative at 7 days as consultant has now given me (perhaps false) hope

This is true. In my case I continued testing every day and they weren't getting darker.

Great yours is in the right place! Take care and pamper yourself and hopefully it sticks and you get a strong positive very soon.

Iggilypiggily · 20/03/2025 15:41

Aw thank you, I’ve actually got a cold at the minute so am off work resting up which will hopefully help some what! I will take your advice and pamper myself
