Has anyone tried home insemination?

I am 37 and DP is 45. Blessed with DD who is 19 and DS who is 15.

I am strongly feeling I would like another. I do feel that we are quite a bit older though, especially our combined ages, so it's kind of a now or never thing.

Since childhood I have suffered with urine infections, PIV sex is a major trigger for them and I am now on preventative antibiotic to take after sex (which I am concerned about developing resistance to), we have to also make sure we both wash before and after and I need to pee straight after, or the friction will push bacteria up. This has been life altering and painful. There is no way I can have sex more than once a week, I'm lucky if I can have it once or twice a month!

I came across the idea of home insemination. Because of the infections, and DP being older and taking longer to finish, our sex life is mostly non-PIV anyway. But I am thinking that sex once or twice max a month, even around ovulation, is not going to cut it when TTC at our ages!!

Has anyone been successful with this approach? how did you go about it? supplies etc? We would be dtd once timed as best as we can, and then other attempts would be this method.

Thanks xx

Yes, 10 year old DC was conceived first month of trying this way (same sex couple). Lots of how to information is available on line. You will need 5ml syringes and lube. Advice is ideally to wait about 20 minutes after the specimen is 'produced' to insert, then lie with legs up for 15 minutes. Track ovulation and try every 2 days in the week leading up to ovulation until one day after.

I've friends who have conceived like this; two lesbian couples and one single friend. All worked first time.

Thank you for the really encouraging replies. I'm thinking this will be a good option after all. I am too old to be hoping I'll get pregnant when I can only have sex like once in a fertile period.

Thanks for the info re spacing. I will try to track my ovulation next month (thinking of the clearblue digital) and give the home insemination a go.

If your UTIs are becoming more frequent you might look into Genito urinary syndrome of menopause which is often the first peri symptom. Could be that using local oestrogen cream or pessary would strengthen the loc skin and membranes and make you more resistant to the bacteria.
