How long after miscarriage is it safe to have sex?

I had a miscarriage last weekend, and the doctor said not to try to conceive until after the first cycle, however they didn’t say how long to wait to have protected sex.

We want to ttc ASAP and haven’t got any symptoms left as the bleeding has now stopped, just wondered what timescales people have waited for sex after miscarriage, both protected and unprotected?

thanks x

I’m really sorry for you loss. I waited until I had no bleeding etc, and once I had a negative pregnancy test so there was never any confusion on a new pregnancy/ old hcg levels

I'm going through the exact same situation. I was told it's ideal to wait until after your next period but only because it makes it easier for them to date the pregnancy. If you're ready you can TTC at any point.

I'm still bleeding but was told today I can have sex. If you've stopped bleeding I'd say go for it, protected or unprotected x

I just waited for bleeding to stop, I also didn’t wait to ttc either 🤦🏻‍♀️ but it took a few cycles to get pregnant again anyway so didn’t matter in the end

Thank you everyone for your replies so far.

just wondering how you were told you were ok for sex? We didn’t get given any follow up appointments etc. I passed everything naturally and was scanned last Monday to confirm, they said there was just some blood still in my cervix and I carried on bleeding till Saturday but was never told when I could have sex again.

I’m tempted to just go for it and ttc again but scared of any risks that I might be naive to.

As far as I know if you've stopped bleeding and everything has passed you should be okay, there can be infection risk before then.

Doctors like you to wait a cycle as it's easier to date a pregnancy if they have a LMP to go from x

Sorry for your loss. I had a loss in August and was told by my GP that DTD was ok as long as the bleeding had stopped because there is risk of infection. I waited one cycle to ttc and thats now this month for us

Sorry for your loss OP. The consultant who did my surgery for MMC said that they only advise you to wait until after a period for dating purposes, it’s medically fine to try again as soon as you’ve stopped bleeding. I had my first miscarriage in 2022 at 6 weeks and got pregnant with my now daughter two weeks later. I recently had a MMC and started trying again straight away but it took a couple of cycles. Good luck 💐

Since writing this, I have started to have tinges of red when wiping, luckily we haven’t had sex yet but so much for the bleeding having stopped! Oops.

Give it a while longer

Tested this morning and I’m finally negative! (2 weeks tomorrow since miscarriage).

my app has predicted my ovulation as this week but all ovulation sticks are negative, so will be interesting to see when that comes positive.
