Sex 3 days before ovulation - not TTC

We don’t use contraception (other than rhythm method, which I know isn’t foolproof 😬). We have two girls aged 2 & 3, so definitely not TTC.

Anyway, had an « accident » on Monday 3rd, I’m due to ovulate today (Friday) but I suspect it happened yesterday. Lots of EWCM Wednesday and Thursday, some pain Thursday and then EWCM dropped right off today (Friday).

anyways, does anyone get a drop off of EWCM and ovulate afterwards? I don’t do any temping or OPK, so I don’t know if stops before or after. Even a day extra between sex and ovulation could help me keep my fingers crossed!

we would keep it if i am pregnant, but it would certainly complicate things!!

Get a coil fitted or take Ella one if you don't want a baby

SaltedPotato · 07/06/2024 20:24

Mistakes happen, so unless you're a perfect person who doesn't make mistakes then don't comment...

As pp has said you will be at risk of pregnancy. From what I recall once the mucus goes cloudy you are no longer fertile (as a general rule). I'm in the same boat as you but we had our accident approx 4 days before ovulation.
Hope that it works out how you want it to x

NorthumberlandParent · 07/06/2024 21:01

Thank you. It might be a bit longer than I thought between sex and ovulation then, because I haven’t had any cloudy mucus yet!

of course, accidents do happen but we’re always ready to take on the consequences of our actions. It’s a fair bit of work with two little ones just a year apart, but if the universe has another baby in store for us, so be it! We took the risk 😬

I didn’t do well with with either type of coil and I prefer not to have hormonal interventions as I struggle horribly with my naturally occurring hormones as it is @Unexpectedlysinglemum 🤷🏼‍♀️

@SaltedPotato when is AF due? are you towards the end of the wait or the beginning. I get awfully stressed out not knowing!

sperm can easily live for 5 plus days so a pregnancy is definitely possible.

I became pregnant a week before I ovulated. I was still on my period too! Those were super strong swimmers!

I would take the morning after pill hormones over pregnancy hormones 🫣
But sounds like you are ok about leaving it in fates hands- good luck and best wishes whichever way the dice falls!

SaltedPotato · 07/06/2024 22:05

@NorthumberlandParent AF is due tomorrow at 9dpo. I've needed 'help' to have my son previously so it's unlikely to be sticky. Again as you said will face the consequences.

Outliers · 07/06/2024 22:24

Morning after pill?

NorthumberlandParent · 08/06/2024 06:18

You never know! Sounds like a potential happy accident

Sperm can live for well over 10 days, so 3days/4days etc is a fairly meaningless question. Sounds like you have roughly the same chance of conceiving as someone who IS TTC, ie something like 1 in 8, but if you regularly have sex in the week before ovulation, then it is always going to be roughly that.

SnapdragonToadflax · 08/06/2024 06:30

When I was TTC I tracked my ovulation and symptoms. I discovered I ovulated (very clear peak on the dip sticks) later than I expected - I'd have EWCM drop off, then discomfort, then ovulation was a good 12-24 hours after.

I don't tolerate hormones well either, so we use condoms. You can't rely on the rhythm method - my mum did that 40+ years ago and here I am writing this now 😂

I hope you get the result you want.

cherrybl0ssom5 · 08/06/2024 09:32

I dtd 3 days before my predicted ovulation and got pregnant as a result 😂 I didn’t do any temping, but as others have mentioned sperm can live up 5+ days inside

That is very old information, they are now known to live 10+ days. They hibernate, so looking for moving sperm after 3-5 days gave an entirely false conclusion for many years in the past. Now it is known that they are present and viable in their millions, even if none are moving

NorthumberlandParent · 08/06/2024 12:24

@SnapdragonToadflax thanks, this is really useful info!

yes, we’re three pregnancies and two kids into the rhythm method 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 it is obviously not working

OP posts:
NorthumberlandParent · 08/06/2024 12:25

@cherrybl0ssom5 did you DTD just once or several times before ovulation? This was a one time thing, so I’m hoping chances are slim

OP posts:
NorthumberlandParent · 08/06/2024 12:27

@missedmyappointment i knew that as an outset they might live up to 7 days, but 10?! Jeezo, condoms all the way in future. Thought I was safe 😭

yeah it was just the once

NorthumberlandParent · 09/06/2024 07:29

@cherrybl0ssom5 oh bloody hell 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

OP posts:
SnapdragonToadflax · 10/06/2024 08:57

@NorthumberlandParent I mean, you're clearly not that worried about getting pregnant if you've been using the rhythm method long enough to have three pregnancies and two kids? But using actual contraception would save this panic every month...

It really doesn't matter how many times you have sex. All it takes is one sperm.

NorthumberlandParent · 10/06/2024 12:25

I@SnapdragonToadflax

we’re usually very careful and just completely avoid the fertile window 🤷🏼‍♀️

we’re not in the best position for more kids but I think there’s never a right or wrong time or a right or wrong number of kids. We go with the flow as much as possible

hahaha who knows it might be different for you though!! keep us updated if you feel comfortable x

NorthumberlandParent · 25/06/2024 06:19

Update!

AF arrived on time but was super, super light. Probably my lightest, shortest ever period. Lasted about 1.5 days of actual « bleeding » although I’d say over the whole time I only filled one period cup, so not a lot of blood. I did do a test the first day of AF and it was negative so I guess it’s all good!

DH and I have decided to stop trying to prevent for now though because frankly we’re s**t at it and we don’t mind either way if another baby comes along.
