Anyone who took more than a year to conceive their first child...

I'd love to hear what happened after that.

I've heard that 90% of couples conceive within the first year but I'm on cycle 11 now so it's not looking like I'm going to make it into that group. So I'm really just wondering what happens to the other 10%.

took me about 16 mths; self diagnosis - not enough sex in the beginning, plus haywire cycle due to long term pill use.

I also had some acupuncture for a general feeling crappiness, and got pg about 2 mths later - always wonder if that helped. I didn't tell the chinese man I was ttc.

After DS1 we were using early withdrawal as contraception and I got pg with DS2 after 1 time of finishing properly.

Now I am pg with number 3; took 3 mths this time.

Now I read some stats on this recently. IIRC, 80% will conceive in the first 12 months, 10% in the next 12, and the final 10% will need some help. Nothing about when in the next 12 months though. You have as good a chance in any month as any other, so don't lose hope just because of some arbitrary line in the sand at 12 months (and from a position of being on month 10 of TTC #2, I do know just how glib that sounds, sorry). With DD1 it took 18mths, no AF for 6mths was waiting for an appointment to see a specialist. Got the letter on the friday mum came to stay on the saturday i happen to mention that i thought the milk was off in our cup of tea, she told me it wasn't and i pregnant (i thought she was mad) made me do a test and i was.

When i went to the dr got passed to the midwife who sent me for a scan and was found to be 10 weeks .

Then with dd2 it about 2yrsish (dd1 was 10mth when we started ttc and dd2 was born when dd1 was 3.7mths). Again I was 8wks when i found out. Had 1 mis miscarraige also during this time.

So not only am i crp at getting pg i am also crp at knowing when i am .

Thanks for your replies. I suppose I'm feeling a bit like if it hasn't happened already then it's probably not going to for ages. But it's nice to hear some success stories from people who took a bit longer.

18 months for me! A blend of two things made it happen. Realised I ovulate much later than normal, so was getting frisky at the wrong time! Also, my DH changed jobs (he hated his last one). We went on a last minute holiday to the Spanish hills to chill out and got pregnant there. So, checking my cycle details and reducing stress made it happen.
DS2 took a year to conceive too.
Good luck and don't give up or let it take over. Keep things light and it might just happen soon!

I know 3 women who took more than a year to conceive the first time, went on to conceive the 2nd one very quickly thereafter.

Hi there eachpeachpearplum We weren't using any contraception and had a very healthy BD life (but weren't actively trying) for 3 years before conceiving DS. This was due to my epically long cycles of three months or more a time. I was scanned for PCOS which came back clear. I have an under-active thyroid but it was under control. Since TTC number 2 I have found out I actually do have PCOS and we have been TTC for nearly 8 months now and I'm only on cycle 3.
If you're at all worried, please see your GP cos the NHS give you gynae appointments which seem like eons away! Eg, my follow-up Gynae appointment isn't until August . Best to get your foot in the door as early as poss! They normally start taking you more seriously if you've been TTC for a year or more.

Was something like 15 months for dd1, no reason for it, regular cycles, lots of 'trying'. Think I may have become a bit stressed about it all though - taking temp, etc. Think I should have relaxed and just tried to be more patient really.

Dd2 only took 3 months.

I'm not particularly worried that there's anything wrong with me. I have regular cycles, I'm not overweight, I've taken my temperature and seem to be ovulating etc. I guess there could be something wrong with DH, but I'm more worried that it's going to take 6 years or 10 or something like that. There's quite a lot of family pressure too, which doesn't really help. I've been trying to focus on other things as much as possible, but it's hard.

I am a bit the same as thequietone. Took 18 months. Cycle was a bit long (35 days ish) and I ovulated late, plus didn't try enough each month. Went on hols and it happened . Had a few tests done to check I was ovulating and also found out I had polycystic ovaries (although not PCOS itself). Was going to go for more tests in a few weeks time (DH was going to have checks done too) when it happened.

Second time happened on first attempt and we got two babies .

Good luck with it - it will probably be fine but do understand how hard it is when it just doesnt seem to happen. Bet it does though. Try not to let it dominate your thoughts (difficult I know)

Are you sure you know when you ovulate? I stupidly read the books and assumed mid cycle but actually do at the end of my period. Once we figured this out it happened. Took us 10 months.

Hello,

It took us about 15 months. To be honest i think it was mostly because i was stressing and thinking about it too much, which is hard not to do if you really want a baby! I was scared it was never going to happen and we were thinking give it another couple of months, then see about going for tests. Then i fell pregnant I think it had a lot to do with my birthday weekend, we went out and had a lovely relaxing time for the first time in ages, and although it was obviously in the back of my mind, that's the first time in ages we just relaxed and weren't doing it just to try for a baby (sorry if that's tmi )

Good luck, and although i know it's hard, try not to focus on it too much (says me that's been trying for no2 and can't stop thinking about it!!)

Thanks kerala - I'm fairly sure I know when I'm ovulating as I've done temping for several months and it's always been around 13 days before my period.

took me 13 months to conceive ds. it was the old clichet of going for tests and that month I found out I was pg. In fact I went for a day 3 blood test after a what I thought was light period, rang for the result two weeks later and dr asked if I was on the pill same day I fainted at work so did a pg test on the off chance and it was positive.

Have been ttc for a second for three years now though. Dh dx with low sperm count nearly two years ago so we've now accepted it's not going to happen and I sold all my nursery furniture at the weekend .

It is possible to get too caught up in ttc though, and hard not to think that you will get pg straight away, even though you know deep down it can take time, iyswim?

Oh - you confused me for a minute there, as I thought you were EachPeachPearMum, but she already has a child!

I took 3.5 yrs to conceive the first time, using OPKs for the last 6-8 months of that.

After that ended in m/c it took another 7 months of intensive trying (charting, OPKs, sex several days in a row) to conceive dd.

I'm pregnant again now, and this one took 14 months to conceive.

Agree with CaptainKarvol's stats rather than yours.

DS1 took 7 years of on and off trying. I say on and off because after a while we just thought it wasn't going to happen. We were both very into our jobs and decided if it wasn't meant to be that was ok, so we didn't do a lot of checking dates etc. Went on a great holiday with the baby money we'd saved and I was preg a month later. DS2 took 2 months.

Took us almost five years.
Three cycles of clomid failed, gave up...bingo!

TTC is such a random business.....

For DD, it took nearly three years and six cycles of chlomid.

DC2 has (so far!) taken two-and-a-half years and eight rounds of chlomid. Am about to have IVF.

Unexplained infertility (on my part) both times.

Best of luck! You might still find you make the 90%!
