Positive but didn't expect to be - I've been drinking!

Had a chemical last month, an ectopic a year and a half or ago (losing a fallopian tube in the process) - I didn't think it would happen this month so had a couple of nights out with friends and my husband, and had a few drinks. I also lapsed back into vaping. I've thrown my last vape away.

But I got a really clear positive today! I'm so hopeful and excited and happy but also terrified - I'd intended to be my healthiest when conceiving and I'm worried that if this does progress into a healthy pregnancy, I'll have given it a terrible start. Any thoughts?

Congratulations! Please don’t worry - focus on having a healthy and happy pregnancy from now on. Wonderful news after clearly having such a hard time with conceiving! 🥰

Surely many pregnancies happen after drink-fuelled evenings.

Minimum85percentCocoa · 10/12/2023 10:44

You’ll both be fine. I drank a lot of vodka the weekend before I found out. 12 year old dd is bright, healthy and happy.

im not certain, but I think the risk v early on is a lot less than drinking later in pregnancy.

Minimum85percentCocoa · 10/12/2023 10:45

It’s also v normal to feel worried about something you’ve done and how it might affect dc. I still do it! Try and enjoy your news and put this to the back of your mind.

As above, nothing to be worried about here, it's really early and a few drinks and a bit on vaping right at the beginning won't make any difference as long as you stop once you find out, which you have. Congratulations, please don't stress about this. I had similar history when I got pregnant with my first (without the ectopic) and I had a night where I was really, really drunk and sick after friends telling us about their pregnancy, as well as regular nights out as we weren't really trying again yet (about to move house). Couple of weeks later found out I was pregnant and that one has just started university, absolutely no medical issues whatsoever.

It’s not until later that what you’re eating and drinking impacts on the baby. It’s just a bundle of cells at the moment with a yolk sack as it’s source of nutrients so don’t stress.

Congratulations!

I had a really big night out the weekend before I found out I was expecting DC1. I mean BIG. I really went for it. DC is now 18 years old and is fine!

AIstolemylunch · 10/12/2023 10:52

Yeah exactly I don't think there would even be a way for you to pass alcohol to the foetus yet as the placenta and umbilical cord won't be fully established yet, assumin your just a few weeks pregnant.

I think drinking/smoking in the 2nd and 3rd trimester is where they think the damage is done. Even then, my mother did both throughout her pregnancy with me, as was normal then, and I am fine, if a little short!

Junebughustle · 10/12/2023 11:10

Thank you all so much! That's so reassuring ❤️ hoping against hope this goes smoothly!

Sending all good wishes for your pregnancy OP. 🤞 💐

I remember making a very similar post on here 19 years ago! Please relax and got everything crossed for you OP.

Please don’t worry. This happens all the time. I am currently 23 weeks and spent the first couple of weeks of this pregnancy unknowingly drinking cocktails whilst on holiday. I was also not in the best of health and had lost 11kg making my bmi on the low side. But so far my pregnancy has been very “normal”. With DS1 I think I was out drinking every night for a week celebrating the end of the term before I found out I was pregnant and he is just perfect. Your body is amazing and can go through so much but will still be protecting that little one. Unless you carry on drinking and vaping you’ll have caused no harm!

Mangotango39 · 11/12/2023 10:16

Congrats!
oh jeez don't worry one bit, not many people know so early on therefore often drink.
no issues would have been caused x
