Due on my period on our honeymoon! TTC before?

hoomallow · 20/08/2023 20:16

Cycles do fluctuate slightly but Flo seems to think I’m due on my period a couple of days after we fly out on our honeymoon

This leaves us in a tricky position. If we don’t try before wedding I’ll almost definitely be menstruating for my whole honeymoon (aargh). If we do start trying and are lucky straight away, I would be 4 to 5 weeks on honeymoon - so couldn’t surely drink and potentially might feel poorly?

Did anyone deal with this kinda timing?

The most logical thing would be to stop your period with hormones rather than roll the dice for pregnancy or have to deal with it while you’re away. Norithesterone will do the trick but , it often comes with unpleasant side effects like bloating, headache , mood swings and the motherbitch of all periods when you finally have one. How many cycles do you have before you go? Because if you have a few, I’d do the norithesterone trick now, to reset the cycle for two weeks later , hope that new cycle sticks so that you will not be due on on honeymoon but won’t be suffering the effects of the hormone pill either.

dementedpixie · 20/08/2023 20:25

I took norethisterone recently with no side effects and a normal period afterwards.

Moonrising · 20/08/2023 20:25

Not honeymoon but i found out I was pregnant on holiday so I would have been 4/5 weeks and my morning sickness started straight away! I was throwing up the whole journey home...it was horrendous. I also couldn't drink alcohol, had to find decaf drinks, be careful about what I was eating etc so that's something else to consider about being pregnant on your honeymoon!

Thank you! Worried about this x

I do not recommend norethisterone. I took it on my last holiday and when I stopped taking it I had the worst period of my life. I had to get up in the night because of the pain. Even when I was taking it on holiday it still felt like my period was always on the verge of coming. Really not pleasant at all.

Broodywuz · 20/08/2023 22:03

How regular are your periods? Are you on any kind of hormonal contraception just now?

Yeah it’s weird isn’t it? I took it maybe 3 times in my youth and bleed maybe an extra day after withdrawing -so almost zero side effects. Took it another few times in my thirties and every time had really awful side effects. My daughter became a danger to society on it but my sister had no side effects at all. I’d suspect that given it’s a standard dose and we aren’t all the same in terms of build and chemistry that perhaps it might be that the dose ain’t quite right sometimes?

vipersnest1 · 20/08/2023 22:10

@hoomallow, so take the norithesterone now and then don't ttc until after the wedding?

ohcrums · 20/08/2023 22:11

Go for it and don't drink

QueenOfWeeds · 20/08/2023 22:12

DH and I went wild camping abroad for our honeymoon. I got my period on our wedding night and we spent the first few nights with him standing guard with his back to me, wearing a head torch backwards so I could see to sort out my tampons at night without having to hold a torch (in hindsight we should have bought a lamp!). Not romantic but definitely a display of love. I got pregnant on the following cycle BUT I did spend a little bit of our wedding night being upset and disappointed that we hadn’t managed to conceive. So maybe just have that in mind and be prepared to adjust your expectations.

Whataretheodds · 20/08/2023 22:14

Just take the pill or get noristherone. I echo PP you don't want to risk morning sickness/not being able to eat or drink stuff on honeymoon

Mischance · 20/08/2023 22:14

I spent my wedding night doubled up with the most dreadful period pain - no sleep and felt so sick. It was not due.

No but you could go on it as an alternative to nortistherone

Do you think, with so little time?

I would start trying - but then I didn’t get sick at the 4/5 week stage. Felt normal ish then.

Felt rubbish about 7-14 weeks instead!

TippledPink · 21/08/2023 08:00

I tried going on the pill just before our honeymoon and I just bled the whole time. Never had that issue before on the pill but of course it didn't work for my honeymoon!

HowcanIhelp123 · 21/08/2023 08:04

Depends on several factors. If you're trying straight away because you're 40 then I'd start trying instantly and if you feel sick you feel sick. I had horrendous morning sickness but didn't kick in until 6 weeks. Not everyone gets sickness and it often doesn't start that early.

When I was younger I'd have done anything not to have my period while away. Now there's period pants, swimwear, menstrual disc (you can even have sex with discs in if you want but I always just prefer to stick a towel down to catch any mess, we're adults and doesn't put us off 🤣). Now I wouldn't do the hormones as they mess me up too much and options are better.

Whataretheodds · 21/08/2023 08:10

You're not going for at least another 4-5 weeks? Yes that's enough time

Thank you, this is good to know. I know some people wouldn’t even test until well into the 4th week

That’s true! Less bothered about the bleeding and more thinking of any cramps, etc, general bloating. Reluctant to use artificial hormones so close

Are you going somewhere exotic on honeymoon? Vaccinations, insect sprays, etc might not be great with pregnancy and food poisoning/tummy bugs are also more common in some places. You could just be giving yourself a whole different type of worry.

I'd just stock up on some good period stuff (menstrual cup, period swimsuit) if it's about sex, you can also get these soft menstrual cups shaped like a saucer that you can still have sex with - about like this https://www.saaltco.uk/products/saalt-disc

Saalt Disc

The Saalt Menstrual Disc was designed to be the best menstrual disc. Made in the USA from medical-grade silicone, it’s worn internally like a tampon. FDA registered.

Think about how you only have to miss a couple of pills before you're not protected against pregnancy. The dosage is not significant.

Don't use it if you're not comfortable but it's not going to impact your ability to TTC when you come off it.

No none of those worries for where we are going to
