Hi
I know the chances of being successful are slim while feeding, but is anyone in the same position? What age gaps are you hoping for if you are? X

Not sure of your source there. I'm in a bf support group of hundreds of women and loads of us have had second and third babies whilst feeding and many continue to tandem feed.

Best of luck!

TTCm · 18/08/2023 19:41

@Flittingaboutagain thats really reassuring to know! I know it can still happen, but I just need to wait to see if I ovulate etc. my little one is still feeding day and night.

thank you 🙂

I'm still breastfeeding my 16 month old and am 5 months pregnant with DC2. Got pregnant 1st cycle unprotected sex so in my experience bf had no impact on my fertility. Good luck

TTCm · 18/08/2023 19:45

@TrudyProud congratulations! Did you have a period before you conceived? Are you planning on tandem feeding? X

I tried to conceive whilst breastfeeding from 12m pp - period never returned but fell pregnant 23m pp - had cut down feeds but was still breastfeeding and continued throughout pregnancy.

Plinkyplonkyplod · 18/08/2023 20:15

Fell pregnant when breastfeeding my first baby twice, one a miscarriage when she was 18 months, another successful pregnancy which began when she was about 24 months. Periods from about 2 months pp with her, despite ebf (yes I'm still bitter about it 😂).

Fell pregnant when breastfeeding my second baby aged 18 months. I had periods from 14 months pp.

I don't think the chances of falling pregnant whilst breastfeeding are slim at all. Breastfeeding is really only a half decent contraceptive in a baby under 1 year old (may be actually under 6 months old?) who is feeding overnight and also I believe only if the mother is not having periods.

Best of luck to you 🤞🤞🤞

We wanted to try again as soon as we could as we struggled to conceive our DS. He is currently 10.5 months and still waiting for my periods to return though ☹️. I combi feed but he only really has a couple of small breastfeeds a day now, along with a couple of small bottles, as he eats solids well. I had thought (hoped!) that I would start ovulating/getting periods again once the feeds reduced but nothing so far. Some of my friends have had to wait until they stopped breastfeeding completely before they got their periods back so I'm thinking the same might be true for me (I have had other friends get their periods back within a couple of months of their DC being born despite EBF). It's hard because I enjoy breastfeeding my DS but I know my biological clock is ticking (I'm 39) and we struggled to conceive him so realistically I think I am going to have to stop breastfeeding him soon if I want to stand any chance of having another one.

I should have added both times I got pregnant at 18 months it was literally month 1-2 of trying. Then the pregnancy which followed my miscarriage took about 4 months to conceive.

A compromise may be to stop breastfeeding at night as I think that plays a significant role in return of fertility.

  • again all of us feed to sleep in the group and feed back to sleep overnight and hasn't impacted on fertility at all. I fell pregnant when my toddler was feeding six times a day including overnight. Many of us had our periods return at various times without cutting feeds so I'd speak to La Leche League or NCT if you want facts.

I still feed my 2.5 year old and am TTC #2 at the moment. I have friends in the same position as me who are now pregnant, so I don't think it causes any issues - not once your periods return anyway

HopefullMumto4 · 19/08/2023 21:16

I was feeding my 9m old when I fell pregnant (on purpose 😂)

I found feeding while pregnant horrible though and had to stop, I had the worst breastfeeding aversion I would have to sit on my hands to stop myself pushing him away

ilovo · 19/08/2023 21:24

Hi Op,

We are TTC number 2. Have a 16 month old who is a boob monster and period returned at 8 weeks PP 🥴

We are on cycle 4 at the moment.

I've read varying things about breastfeeding and fertility too!

NamechangeTTC · 22/08/2023 12:30

Not ttc yet but vaguely considering

ebf and got my period at 9 months pp

still feeding multiple times a day at 25 months!

JC084 · 22/08/2023 15:35

Just as an update - I commented on here the other day to say I was still feeding my nearly 3 year old and was also TTC number 2.
Had my BFP this week and so it is definitely possible to breastfeed and conceive

TrudyProud · 22/08/2023 20:49

Congratulations @JC084 !

JC084 · 22/08/2023 20:51

@TrudyProud thank you ☺️

I have got pregnant twice breastfeeding. First my period came back 3 months pp (yes he was EBF day and night), I got pregnant after 1 period. That's sadly ended in a miscarriage. Then after DC2 my period came back 4 months pp (again EBF day and night) and I fell pregnant when he was 7 months old.
