Can you still peak if not ovulating?

I'm really not convinced I'm ovulating every month even though I get a high peak every month.

Does anyone know if it's possible to still peak and not ovulate?

I can't do BBT due to different waking patterns so I don't know how else to find out about it

Please help 😩

I can’t speak for myself but I do have a friend who’s TTC and she recently mentioned she doesn’t ovulate. I asked if her tests were peaking each month and she said they were. It was confirmed with blood tests that she doesn’t ovulate.

Ttcmumma · 24/04/2023 14:00

The peak is the surge of LH which encourages the ovary to release the egg, the rise in temperature is what determines it successfully did so. You can peak and not successfully release an egg unfortunately

If you aren't doing bbt what makes you think you aren't actually ovulating?

Daffodil21 · 24/04/2023 14:40

Yes, as PP said the surge is the hormone that encourages the egg to be released, but only a progesterone blood test can confirm if you've actually ovulated. They tend to call it a cycle day 21 blood test, but actually it should be carried out 7 days after you think you've ovulated and the day 21 is based on a 28 day cycle assuming you ovulate on day 14. If your cycles are longer or you have a longer/shorter luteal phase then day 21 could be incorrect.

My cycles were longer and varying, so I used the OPKs to tell me when I was likely ovulating, and then booked the progesterone blood test for 7 days later.

Hope that makes sense and good luck!

@overthinkersanonnymus just wanted to jump on to say I’m concerned about this too.
But the fertility consultant at a clinic we paid for some tests at said if I’m getting a peak then I’m ovulating.
We’re now at a year TTC so will be starting the process with the gp soon and understand they do 21 day tests (or 7 day after ovulation) tests. I believe it’s a standard test you have to have before they refer but I’m definitely going to make sure I can have one as I am also concerned after 12 months!
I would say though that I do get other signs of ovulation as well as peak OPk - regular periods, EWCM most months and sometimes tender boobs but not always but know that doesn’t indicate that I’ve actually ovulated.
Do you get any other signs other than peak OPk?
I would do bbt too but sleep isn’t great so wouldn’t be accurate and also I just don’t think I can be obsessed with yet another thing! 🙈

This is exactly me @Foreverhopeful92

I have EWCM, regular 29 day periods and ovulation pain. The only thing that's making me think I'm not ovulating regularly is that last month, at 2dpo till AF arrived, my boobs were so, so painful which made me think "this must be because I've got really high progesterone due to ovulating". It's not something I've had before and in now 9dpo with absolutely no breast pain so possibly low progesterone.

Last month (sore boob month) I had ovulating pain for around 4 days, a actually started to worry I had a ruptured cyst or something. And then boom, ovulation day, pains melted away and the boobs kicked off the next day.

I just feel like last months symptoms were a really strong indication that I'd genuinely ovulated and because I've not had it before or since, maybe I'm not ovulating regularly at all!!

Anyway, I've got an appt with the GP on the 3rd to be referred for 21 day bloods which should fall around the 19th.

Sorry for rambling 😂😂

@overthinkersanonnymus Great you’ve got an appointment lined up.

I would say that I have different ‘symptoms’ every month following my peak OPk. Sometimes sore boobs but not always, sometimes cramps/weird sensation
but I do think some of it is just heightened sensitivity to everything in symptom spotting as when I wasn’t TTC I didn’t notice anything I notice now!

Hope your appointment goes well! 💕

overthinkersanonnymus · 24/04/2023 16:22

I wonder if they require you to do a few months of bloods to check you're regularly not ovulating or whether they'll just take your one test as the answer?

OP posts:
Foreverhopeful92 · 24/04/2023 18:32

@overthinkersanonnymus thats a good question! I honestly have no idea! I’m at the start of the referral journey so feel like I’m learning as I go along at the moment through Google (And mumsnet threads! Ha)
youll have to report back after your appointment :)

overthinkersanonnymus · 24/04/2023 20:06

@Foreverhopeful92 I definitely will do!

There are tests called 'proov' tests that I have seen which are the urine version of a day 23 blood test. Not sure how reliable but they have good reviews and easily available on amazon.

From what Ive heard from gynaes over the years it is rare to have a regular cycle without ovulation. You can have the odd anovulatory cycle, especially as you get older, but for your periods to be consistently regular you most likely are ovulating.

Re the sore boobs I would try not to read into it too much, I have different symptoms every month and different intensities, and there are other things that can cause breast pain too it may well be concidental timing.

I hope you get answers from the Drs soon.

SummerInTheSky · 25/04/2023 12:00

You can peak just before your period, as many posters have said before the egg is released.
But at that stage you shouldn't have the egg white CM which is a dead giveaway you are ovulating.
So EWCM + peak ovulation should be when you ovulate.
Clear/no discharge and peak may mean you are about to meet Aunt Flo x

MK85 · 25/04/2023 13:53

You can peak and not release an egg
. When you peak it just means your surging the hormone LH which is responsible for ovulation, but it dosent mean you are definitely going to release an egg at all.
I'm not sure what consultant would tell someone if they peak they are definitely ovulating as that's simply not true at all. I'd be questioning his credentials. Surging LH is in no way a definitive answer if your ovulating or not.
The only way to know for certain is with a blood test which is taken a week after you believe you ovulated. Generally its taken on day 21 but it may need tweaked if you don't have a perfect 28day cycle

MK85 · 25/04/2023 14:08

@SummerInTheSky
Yes you can have ewcm before a period. Its perfectly normal and common. The ewcm is caused by estrogen surge .Your estrogen also surges before a period which is why many women experience ewcm just before their period, not just while ovulating. Alot of women get ewcm at different stages throughout their cycle due to estrogen fluctuating. You can also ovulate and not produce ewcm. Not every woman does. Alot of women don't produce egg white cm at all while ovulating

Ttcmumma · 25/04/2023 14:27

I am one that does not produce ewcm! I do have varying cm throughout the month but never what I'd describe as ewcm and I definitely ovulate and have concieved 3 times in the past

overthinkersanonnymus · 24/05/2023 11:11

Just to keep this thread updated, I had day 21 bloods done yesterday and will get my results next Wednesday.

I'm not really sure what will happen after that with regards to any help I might need. Progesterone maybe? If anyone knows what I'm to expect, I'd appreciate the heads up!
