Ive just realised that this is much more common that i ever thought!!

My situation was that the condom split and i took the MAP the next morning and followed the instructions to the letter but still fell pregnant. It was 9 years ago and i ended up having a termination.

I just wondered how many people have got pregnant even with the MAP!!!???

the results of my MAP taken the morning after is currently in the process of falling asleep in his pushchair - he's 8 months old.

beaniesteve · 16/02/2008 10:46

Me also. I took the MAP after a split condom then three weeks later discovered I was pregnant. This was over 10 years ago. It actually really irritates me when people assume the MAP is 100% successful. There is just no way of knowing because many people who take it aren't even pregnant and many who take it stay pregnant.

Me. TWICE!

TeaHugger · 16/02/2008 10:51

Me too now with 10month dd.

TeaHugger · 16/02/2008 10:52

But wouldn't change anything for the world...

twelveyeargap · 16/02/2008 10:57

First born arrived following condom split, morning after pill and all in the month before I was to start taking the contraceptive pill and was waiting for "first day of next period" to start it.

Something tells me she was "meant to be".

SparklyDYSONGothKat · 16/02/2008 11:11

me! I took the MAP 5 hours after the deed, and still fell pregnant. I miscarriage at 6 weeks

Lulu34 · 17/02/2008 02:47

its only 75% effective. so basically 1 in 4 who take it who got pregnant will remain pregnant.

belgo · 17/02/2008 07:29

I wonder how they work out those statistics Lulu34?

talkingmongoose · 17/02/2008 08:19

My MAP baby is a gorgeous, tall 13 year old.

Do you think there's actually anything in the flipping pills?

Lulu34 · 17/02/2008 09:49

belgo im not really sure because they dont actually know how many people are pregnant in the first place... and efficacy also varies on when you take it and when in your cycle the unprotected sex took place.... i guess they base it on how many people would get pregnant anyway regardless of what contraception they use and how many people would get pregnant if they were using nothing compared with how many people who still are pregnant after taking it.

an emergency copper IUD fitted within 5 days of unprotected sex or up to day 19 in a 28 day cycle prevents 99% of pregnancies so is much more reliable.

beaniesteve · 17/02/2008 13:53

There is really no way of telling how effective the MAP is. People take it all the time but there is absolutely no way to know if they were actually ovulating at that time. Sure, some people may know that they might have been at that point in their cycle but the vast majority of people probably take it at a time when there was no chance of them getting pregnant anyway.

We know that it is medically an effective way to stop a pregnancy but you actually have to know that you were fertilised to know it's been effective for you.

beaniesteve · 17/02/2008 13:54

Apologies - I see Lulu34 already said the same

elkiedee · 26/02/2008 23:04

At the time it happened to me (split condom), I didn't end up pregnant but I might not have anyway. But it made me feel really really sick so if I had got pregnant it also might not have been of much use. It's probably medically more effective if you can keep it down!
