TTC at 44..am I being realistic and can it happen?

Have been TTC for 6 months so not that long at all compared to others. Looking at the stats - apparently 50% of women at 44 get pregnant within one year. I'm not sure if the stats help or not!?!
But I am feeling I should be more realistic in that, at my age, it just may never happen again..

Got preg with my DD in the first cycle at 39, but realise now I was probably just very very lucky! No history of issues, and relatively healthy and fit, but my age is my age..no skirting round that!
periods still incredibly regular.

Every month I symptom spot like crazy - convince myself this is the month (sore boobs, cramps, white CM, moody), then AF arrives..

This month though, we DTD only 2 days before ov (too tired and stressed for more than that!) so it's probably very unlikely, but I do have far less symptoms, just feel achingly tired and a bit sick. 2 days till AF is due...
Keeping everything crossed!

Does anyone else have any experiences or stories about getting preg in your 40s?

A friend of mine had her first successful natural pregnancy at 44, so it's definitely possible. Good luck OP

Hi. I’ve just had a baby at 43. It’s my fourth and I had got pregnant very quickly with the other three in thr first month of trying. Started ttc at 40 for over a year and didn’t happen. Was happy with my lot and thought I’d missed the boat. Didn’t use precautions and still no pregnancy so thought fertility had dropped off a cliff. Completely given up as period becoming lighter and closer. At 42 unexpectedly got a positive pregnancy test and she is now here and perfect. My midwife told me that as long as you are having periods it’s possible. My personal experience is that it is possible but much harder after 40. Good luck 🤞

Thanks for your reply and the luck Xela - how wonderful for your friend! Lovely to hear (and does give me hope!)

Thanks too for your reply Whatames that's wonderful to read! Will keep the glimmer of hope alive - you and others are testament that it can happen, but may just take a little longer than last time...

I’m 43 in July and I’ve got pregnant twice in the past twelve months. First was a MMC and second ended at 12 weeks with a TFMR after a positive screening for trisomy 21. I’m hopeful that the next one will be the lucky egg.

FrodisCapering · 22/03/2023 10:41

41 and 43 here.
We had no issues with conception and both pregnancies were fine. Two healthy and happy children later we are done!
Good luck to you!

Hi, I am 43 and trying to conceive my second (conceived my first at 41). Saw a video on YouTube that said that the stats change slightly in your favour if you have already been pregnant. I tried to link the video but can’t figure it out. It’s by Natalie Crawford MD called getting pregnant at 40. Cheered me up a bit.
Good luck everyone!

Improbablynuts · 22/03/2023 10:42

Oh I'm sorry to hear that lused, that sounds incredibly hard. Sending you lots of luck for your lucky egg very soon

Thanks for sharing Casca - I'll check the video out, I think it may help to get myself in the right frame of mind. Sending you lots of luck

@Improbablynuts if it's 2 days to your period you could probably do a pregnancy test to find out.
Although I know it's a slippery slope to go down the testing constantly route.

Improbablynuts · 22/03/2023 10:51

Thanks Derby and you're right..think I've been putting it off. With my DD I didn't get a BFP till after my period was due, but I'm probably just making excuses - hate being in limbo but don't want the BFN!
I might buy one and test tomorrow morning..
I've spent soo much money over the last 6 months on tests that I made myself promise to wait just a little going forwards!

@Improbablynuts Thanks, you too!

I’m 42 and TTC my first (long story). This thread has given me hope, thank you.

mumof1or2 · 22/03/2023 11:23

I'm 43 and currently 9 months pregnant! I had a child when I was 33 and then tried again for number two from about the age of 39. Had a couple of miscarriages (one of which had DS) and had completely given up all hope when I found out I was pregnant with this one. I highly recommend reading It Starts With The Egg for tips on how to make your eggs healthy at our age. Good luck!

Improbablynuts · 22/03/2023 11:36

I'm really glad 'Snowy*, me too. Sending you luck

So happy for you Mum, thanks for sharing your experience. And thank you for the book recommendation - I'm a very keen reader so will order that one!

@CascaChan that gives me hope - the fact that I’ve been pregnant 6 times in total (1 termination and 3 healthy babies in my 20s, 1 MMC and 1 TFMR) will hopefully stand in my favour. It is definitely possible at this age.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/03/2023 11:40

Stats don't sound right

50% get preg in first year for over 44

Sounds very high tbh. I wouid have thought more 20/25%

Yes I know those who have had babies naturally at that age

Mine was ivf and almost 44 when gave birth

Having your fsh and amh tested will give you some answers

Sending fairy dust to all

snowysnowglobe · 22/03/2023 11:56

Those stats definitely aren’t right. But general stats don’t tell you anything about your personal chances anyway.

Improbablynuts · 22/03/2023 12:07

Yep - agree - they do seem high. Read similar percentages online but they can be so easily skewed and so many confounding factors..

Doesn't take into account the individual etc.

Sending luck and fairy dust to you all too!
